2000 Season
Tim Belcher has been very resilient throughout his career. Now 39 years of age, he contemplated retirement during his rehab from offseason elbow surgery last year. While he showed down the stretch that he still had something left in the tank, his days as a workhorse may be over. Last year marked the first time since his rookie season that he didn't amass at least 132 innings.
Pitching & Defense
Belcher has made the transition from young power pitcher to a guy who relies on savvy to outsmart hitters. It's a recipe that has proven successful when he's been healthy. He works a cut fastball off of his high-80s fastball, which he speeds up by mixing in a slider, splitter and change. He always has been a reliable fifth infielder and does an effective job of keeping basestealers at bay.
2001 Outlook
The Angels declined the $5.1 million option on Belcher's contract, but they are bringing him back on a minor league contract this spring. Although he had some decent outings last September, he'll have to use every ounce of guile to outpitch Anaheim's young arms.
