Scouting Report
1999 Season
Signed to a two-year contract as a free agent, Rich Amaral provided the Orioles with steady backup play at all three outfield positions and as an emergency infielder. His playing time dropped off noticeably the last six weeks of the season.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Amaral continued to make solid contact but provided little production last year, hitting to all fields with no power. He struggled against righthanders for the first time since 1994, and he played almost solely against southpaws down the stretch. Amaral used experience and speed to his advantage on the basepaths, though he had a mediocre year stealing bases. Defensively, his speed allows him to cover the gaps, but he has a below-average arm.
2000 Outlook
The end of Amaral's career is in sight. The Orioles want to get younger, and it's not impossible that they would decide to just eat the final year of his contract. His speed and versatility might earn him another two or three seasons as a bit player.
