Scouting Report
1999 Season Veteran utilityman Rafael Bournigal began the year at Triple-A Oklahoma with the Rangers before being sold to the Mariners in late April. Replacing the injured Alex Rodriguez, he had two homers and nine RBI in his first six games, then remembered he was Rafael Bournigal. He played sparingly once Rodriguez returned.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense Bournigal's hands are as soft as any infielder in the game, as his lifetime .988 fielding percentage attests. He has good range at both shortstop and second base, and a decent throwing arm. He's not flashy, just very solid. At the plate, Bournigal's two home runs equaled his career total. For the most part, he looks to make contact. He's an excellent bunter and hit-and-run man. He didn't attempt to steal last year but has average speed.
2000 Outlook Bournigal's lifetime on-base and slugging percentages are both higher than Rey Ordonez'. His lifetime fielding percentage also is higher. But Ordonez is considered a star while Bournigal was non-tendered in December. He'll be on somebody's bench in 2000.
