Scouting Report
1999 Season Signed as a free agent after San Diego released him, Scott Sanders began last year in Chicago's rotation. Six starts later, he was exiled to the bullpen. He pitched decently in middle relief at first, but hit the skids in mid-June and took two months to recover. By September, he'd been relegated to mopup work.
Pitching, Defense & Hitting Sanders throws a low-90s fastball and hard slider. When he has command of his slider he can be quite effective. Most of the time he struggles to get the slider over, allowing hitters to sit on his fastball. He has nothing else to fall back on, and never has had an out pitch for lefthanders. He works up in the zone and is vulnerable to the longball. Sanders doesn't hold runners particularly well. He had a poor year in the field, but has fielded decently in the past. He's a decent hitter and capable bunter.
2000 Outlook The Cubs decided against bringing Sanders back for 2000, declining to tender him a contract in December. After trying for three years to recapture his 1996 form, he may be running out of chances.
