Scouting Report

1999 Season
In his second season as Terry Steinbach's caddy, Javier Valentin performed much better than he had in 1998. He played particularly well in June, seeing regular action when Steinbach was injured.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
A switch-hitter, Valentin does considerably better batting righthanded. He's more patient from the right side and is less prone to overswinging. A strong man, Valentin showed power in the low minors but hasn't shown much in the majors. He runs like a catcher and is no threat to steal. His defense is very good. Valentin has above-average arm strength and a quick release. He blocks balls well and moves quickly behind the plate. The Twins like the way he works with pitchers.

2000 Outlook
Once a highly regarded prospect, Valentin will get first crack at the starting job behind the plate. He'll have to hold off more powerful hitters from the minor leagues in the long run, and might end up as a career backup.
