Scouting Report
1999 Season Rookie righthander Jeremy Powell had a promising year before running out of gas in September. After being called up in July, he posted a 3.34 ERA in his first 12 starts, only to have his numbers ruined by a severe slump over the last four weeks of the season. He threw a total of 188 innings between Triple-A Ottawa and Montreal, 29.1 more than he ever had in a season, so his fatigue was understandable.
Pitching, Defense & Hitting Powell's finesse approach belies his size. He throws a 90-MPH sinker, a curveball, a changeup and a splitter. Oddly, he held his own against lefthanders but was hit hard by righties in the majors, a problem he'd never had in the minors. His stamina is unproven. Powell is competent afield and does an especially good job controlling the running game with his compact stretch delivery. He's not much of a hitter, though.
2000 Outlook Powell has a good chance to make the Expos rotation out of spring training, though his numbers from last year certainly won't guarantee him a spot. He may need more seasoning.
