Scouting Report
1999 Season The nephew of Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, Edgard Clemente has spent most of the last three seasons in Triple-A. Promoted by the Rockies last August with the announced intention to play him every day in center field, Clemente instead found himself sharing time with Terry Shumpert and Jeff Barry.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense Clemente has five-tool potential but still needs to develop. His plus power is hampered by his willingness to chase pitches out of the strike zone. He's a step above average as a runner, but doesn't have the aggressiveness to be a basestealer. Clemente shouldn't be a center fielder, particularly not in the wide-open spaces of Coors Field. He does have a strong arm and plays both corner positions well.
2000 Outlook Clemente is out of options and has too much ability to risk exposing him to waivers. He'll stick with the Rockies this year, probably as the fourth outfielder. It's possible he could compete with Jeffrey Hammonds for the left-field job.
