BOX SCORE
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Rookies Eric Bertrand and John Madden scored second-period goals, leading the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 exhibition victory over the New York Rangers, who rested most of their veterans. Bertrand broke a 1-1 deadlock at 13:05, moving out from behind the net and banking a shot off goaltender J.F. Labbe's skate. Madden, who set up the go-ahead goal, added an insurance tally just over four minutes later. He finished off a 2-on-1 with Bertrand by ripping a slap shot past Labbe from the top of the left faceoff circle. Bertrand, Madden and fellow rookie Steve Brule each had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who blew a two-goal lead in the third period and lost in overtime on Monday at New York. Darren Langdon scored in the opening period and Jamie Lundmark, the ninth overall pick in the 1999 draft, tallied early in the third for the Rangers. They played without Theo Fleury, Adam Graves, Brian Leetch, Valeri Kamensky and Petr Nedved. Chris Terreri stopped 15 of 16 shots over the first two periods for the Devils before Martin Brodeur finished up. Labbe shared goaltending chores with Milan Hnilicka, who turned aside 13 of 14 shots before leaving midway through the second period.
