Burn clinch fourth playoff berth

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Burn clinched a fourth consecutive MLS playoff berth when Jason Kreis kicked in a teammate's misfire for the only goal in a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Clash on Saturday night.

A crowd of 15,584 at the Cotton Bowl saw two teams aided by relatively mild weather move up and down the field but remain scoreless through 78 minutes.

Ted Eck chipped a ball over one San Jose defender, then set his sights for what could have been a hard-charging volley shot from 18 yards. But he misjudged the flight of the ball and saw it bounce innocently off his right knee.

Clash defender Jimmy Conrad was standing next to Kreis as Eck's misfire rolled toward them. Kreis used his body to shield Conrad as the pair clutched and fought for position before the Burn forward fired from 8 yards.

Kreis has a goal or assist in 13 of Dallas' 15 victories this year. His fifth game-winning goal this season -- and 15th of his career -- leaves him one shy of the club record he set last year and ties him for second in the league in that category.

Goalkeeper Matt Jordan added to his MLS season record for shutouts, posting his 10th.

The win officially eliminated the Clash, which will be a postseason no-show for a third consecutive year.

With five games to play, the fourth-place Burn (15-13) technically can still finish first.
