SYDNEY, Australia -- Two-time defending Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati was eliminated from the Sydney International on Tuesday, losing to Russia's Tatiana Panova 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the second round. Roger Federer was ousted by Argentina's Franco Squillari 6-2, 6-3 and became the first men's defending champion in 20 years to lose his first-round match. This is the fourth consecutive year Capriati failed to get past the second round in Sydney, her final tuneup for the Australian Open, which starts Monday. "It is the start of the year, my first match back," the top-seeded Capriati said. "So it's expected that I'm not going to play the greatest my first match," she said. Capriati had 14 double faults and 64 unforced errors on a breezy day on center court. "Does it set me back? No. I'm confident," she said. "It starts, for me, in a Grand Slam. I think I raise my level automatically." In the other women's matches, fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-6 (2), 6-1; qualifier Janette Husarova beat Anna Kournikova 6-4, 2-6, 6-1; Alexandra Stevenson downed Lubomira Kurhajcovaa 7-6 (5), 6-4; and seventh-seeded Chandra Rubin ousted Elena Dementieva 6-3, 7-5. Among the men, sixth-seeded Andy Roddick beat Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-2, and qualifier Mardy Fish downed Richard Krajicek 7-6 (0), 6-4. Carlos Moya advanced with a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 win over James Blake, who partnered Serena Williams last week to win the Hopman Cup for the United States. |
