MIAMI (AP) _ Sterling Hitchcock ended a season-long drought, while Phil Nevin enjoyed a career day at the plate for the San Diego Padres. Nevin's hit a pair of opposite-field two-run homers and tied a career high with five RBIs, helping Hitchcock to his first win of the season, a 7-3 victory over the Florida Marlins before a franchise-low 7,101. "Maybe it was the rain earlier, but we play the game here folks," Marlins manager John Boles said. "We got a hydraulic system and the best ground crew. We play the game." Hitchcock (1-5) allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and no walks. "They (Marlins) got a guy over there with four wins and a six (ERA), and Hitch was 0-5 with a five," Padres pitching coach Dave Smith said. "I don't care how many years you've played, when you look up and see 0-5, you think, `Oh my god, am I ever going to get a win?' " Hitchcock regained his touch and his smile. "The bottom line is wins and losses," Hitchcock said. "When you're not winning, it's not fun. Tonight was fun." Nevin was 3-for-4 as the Padres won their second straight following an eight-game losing streak. "Certain nights you just see the ball better," said Nevin, 6-for-10 with four homers and nine RBIs against the Marlins this season. "I was able to get the ball out over the plate and take the right approach to the baseball." San Diego's Tony Gwynn, sidelined since April 29 because of an injured left knee, was 2-for-4. "Just his presence in the lineup helps a lot of the hitters in our lineup," Nevin said. Jesus Sanchez (4-2) allowed four runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked two in seven innings for the Marlins. "Their guy threw well except for Nevin, he pretty much shut us down," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's not something I want to go through again," Hitchcock said. "I get paid to win ballgames. It gets frustrating and I'm disappointed when it doesn't happen. It was nice to take the field with a 2-0 lead, that's for sure." With Game 5 of the Heat-Knicks NBA series at Miami tonight, Boles and the players are expecting an even smaller turnout. "We could've won and regained momentum, now we may break records with the Heat playing at home," Boles said. "We feel a sense of urgency to play winning baseball to get our fans back." After Damian Jackson singled leading off the sixth, Nevin connected for his second multihomer game of the season and fourth of his career to give the Padres a 4-3 lead. Nevin added an RBI single in the eighth to start a three-run inning. Joe Strong relieved and gave up a two-run single to Carlos Hernandez to make it 7-3. All three runs in the inning were unearned because of Luis Castillo's error at second base to start the inning. After a one-out walk to Jackson in the first inning, Nevin hit an opposite-field home run to give the Padres a 2-0 lead. "It's nice to see him come out of it, he's been struggling," Bochy said. "It's a huge win especially against a left-hander. That's been a thorn in our side. Nevin pretty much carried us." Preston Wilson hit his fifth homer in six games and ninth overall, driving in all three Marlins runs. He had an RBI single in the first, and his two-run shot in the fourth gave Florida a 3-2 lead. "It was kind of like an instructional league atmosphere," Boles said. "What are you going to do. It's a major league game and unfortunately, it's a major league game we lost."
