Scouting Report
1999 Season Recalled in May, Doug Johns initially was used in short relief stints. Later in the season, he proved more effective in a limited starting role. He pitched very well in September, supporting his preference to be a starter.
Pitching & Defense Johns is a finesse pitcher who does a good job of changing speeds on his breaking ball. He likes to spot his fastball on the outer half of the plate. When he's pitching well, he can work his fastball inside against righthanders, keeping them from leaning over the plate. When his control is off, Johns is unable to keep hitters off stride. His move to first base has improved to the point where it's above average. He's a capable fielder.
2000 Outlook Johns' job description for 2000 is uncertain. He dominated lefthanders last season and could take over the lefty setup role from Arthur Rhodes, a free agent. Johns pitched better as a starter, though he won't have an opening in the rotation if Matt Riley makes the club. It's most likely that Johns will shuttle between roles.
