RECAP
PEORIA, Arizona (Ticker) -- Chicago White Sox prospect Jon Garland fired five scoreless innings and Greg Norton tied a franchise record for RBI in the spring en route to a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Garland, 20, gave up three hits while striking out one, after allowing nine runs in as many innings over his first three spring appearances. The 6-6 righthander, who was acquired July 29, 1998 from the Chicago Cubs for reliever Matt Karchner, is expected to start the season in the minor leagues. Norton hit a solo homer in the sixth inning off Arthur Rhodes for his 21st RBI of the spring, matching the team record held by Frank Thomas, Albert Belle and Magglio Ordonez. The switch-hitting Norton hit .255 with 16 homers and 50 RBI in 132 games last season for the White Sox, playing first and third base. Aaron Sele, preparing for his first season with the Mariners, allowed two runs and five hits with a walk and strikeout over five innings.
