VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Coming off a win against one of the NBA's elite teams, the Indiana Pacers hope to fend off one of the league's worst when they visit the slumping Vancouver Grizzlies tonight.
Indiana coach Larry Bird had complained of his squad's complacency after the Pacers dropped five of seven. But his team had no trouble staying focused for 48 minutes against Portland, which may not be the case when they walk into Vancouver tonight. Rik Smits scored 17 points and Rose added 15 to lead seven players in double figures as the Pacers cruised to a 105-86 home romp over the Grizzlies on Friday. Indiana has defeated Vancouver eight times in as many all-time meetings, failing to record a double-digit victory in just two of those encounters. The Grizzlies have lost a season-high eight straight games, including Monday's heartbreaking 118-110 overtime setback here against Houston and former Vancouver first-round pick Steve Francis. The player that shunned the Grizzlies after the draft hit a game-tying jumper as time expired in regulation and sparked a decisive run in overtime by drilling a 3-pointer. Vancouver has not won since a 109-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers here on November 14. The eight-game skid is the Grizzlies' longest since a 13-game drought from February 25-March 16.
