SAN JOSE, California -- The Colorado Avalanche hope to snap a three-game winless streak Tuesday night when they battle the San Jose Sharks.
After four consecutive wins, Colorado played consecutive ties against San Jose and Anaheim before dropping a 3-2 decision at Los Angeles on Sunday. The Avalanche continue to lead the Northwest Division and are third in the Western Conference with 56 points. Joe Sakic has a goal and assist in two games since missing last Wednesday's contest and is riding a 12-game points streak. He has three goals and 18 assists during that stretch. Colorado goaltender Patrick Roy is 5-0-3 in his last eight decisions and has not lost since a 2-1 setback at Buffalo on Dec. 23. San Jose is coming off a 3-2 overtime defeat at Phoenix, losing an opportunity to tie the Coyotes for the top spot in the Pacific Division. The Sharks, who are tonight's action three points out of first, are 2-4-2 over their last eight games. San Jose has been very undisciplined over the last six games, giving the opposition at least five power-play opportunites. As a result, the penalty-killing unit has struggled, allowing eight goals in 34 opportunites. Foes have been feasting on San Jose's weak defensive play of late, taking at least 30 shots on goal in five of six games. The teams skated to a scoreless deadlock in the last meeting on
January 19. The Sharks posted a 4-2 home victory in the first
matchup on December 8, but have alternated wins and losses in
the last five home contests with the Avalanche.
