BOX SCORE
BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- Andrei Nikolishin scored a shorthanded goal 2:05 into overtime to spoil Dominik Hasek's preseason debut as the Washington Capitals claimed a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres started overtime on a 5-on-3 power play and peppered goaltender Craig Billington with several shots, only to be denied. As Peter Bondra skated through the neutral zone, Nikolishin exited the penalty box, creating a 2-on-1. Mathieu Biron stopped Bondra's slap shot from the left wing but allowed a big rebound, which Nikolishin put home for the winner. Hasek looked solid, stopping 15 shots over two periods. His only blemish was a power-play goal by rookie Glen Metropolit late in the first. Rob Ray scored the lone goal for Buffalo, which dropped to 1-3-1 in exhibition play. The game featured an interesting fight with just over five minutes remaining. Bondra and Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre were slugging it out in front of the Sabres' net when Biron stepped in only to be confronted by Billingon.
