Jeff Hughes goal helps managerless Cambridge edge out Basingstoke

Managerless Cambridge beat National League South strugglers Basingstoke 1-0 in the FA Cup thanks to a first-half goal from Jeff Hughes.Joe Dunne took charge of the U's after Richard Money was sacked on Monday and they saw off opponents ranked 53 places below them in the football pyramid. The hosts had dominated even before Hughes gave them a 19th-minute lead, heading Harrison Dunk's cross from the right beyond Aaron Howe. Cambridge were denied further goals by Howe, who made a superb save from Robbie Simpson after good work by Barry Corr and then stopped Corr's low effort from the edge of the box.Simpson headed a deep Donaldson cross off target and Dunk's effort was charged down by Howe, while in the second half Luke Berry shot wide after patient build-up play.Basingstoke nearly stunned their League Two opponents with 21 minutes remaining when sub Liam Enver-Marum struck a 25-yard effort onto the post against his former club, and at the death David Ray's point-blank blast was parried away by Cambridge goalkeeper Chris Dunn following Tom Bird's cross.
