Scott Hogan at the double as Aston Villa ease past Wigan

Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan grabbed a first-half double as Steve Bruce's side swept aside League One leaders Wigan in the Carabao Cup with a 4-1 win at Villa Park.Hogan was on target twice in a pulsating first period - adding to his goal in the previous round against Colchester.Hogan and Albert Adomah put Villa in control before Ryan Colclough reduced the arrears only for Hogan to strike again 60 seconds later and Birkir Bjarnason made the game safe as Wigan surrendered their 100 per cent start to the season.Villa, who like Wigan changed their entire starting line-up, made their early pressure pay when Adomah surged forward and his right-wing cross was steered past Jamie Jones from close range by Hogan in the 19th minute. Not content with being a supplier, Adomah then got in on the goalscoring by volleying home a cross from Bjarnason after 36 minutes.Wigan could easily have wilted under the Villa onslaught but grabbed a lifeline when Colclough powered past Richie De Laet before beating goalkeeper Jed Steer with a low angled drive two minutes before half-time.But Wigan barely had a chance to celebrate before Hogan restored Villa's two-goal advantage with a stunning piece of finishing when he turned on the edge of the box before firing into the top corner.Any hopes of a Wigan comeback were finally dashed in the 74th minute when De Laet fired a low cross into the area and Bjarnason was on hand to convert from six yards.
