Liberty holds off Stetson 57-54 behind Cabbil's 19 points
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Lovell Cabbil scored 19 points and Liberty held off Stetson 57-54 on Tuesday night to reach 20 wins the fastest in program history.
Caleb Homesley added 16 points and Scottie James had 10 for the Flames (20-5, 9-1), who remain second in Atlantic Sun Conference behind Lipscomb (18-4, 9-0).
Stetson outrebounded Liberty 42-31 but gave up 15 points off 16 turnovers and was outscored 32-20 in the paint.
Leo Goodman's jumper capped a 10-2 run and the Hatters trimmed a 29-19 halftime deficit to 36-34, but Keegan McDowell's 3 sparked a 10-0 run and the Flames led by 12 with 11:26 to play. The Hatters closed to 57-54 on Abayomi Iyiola's fade-away jumper with 43 seconds left and they had a chance to tie it but Keith Matthews' open 3 from the wing hit the back of the rim.
Iyiola scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season and Christiaan Jones scored 10 points for Stetson, (5-20, 1-9), which has lost nine of its last 10.
