Broncos Vic Fangio on newly-hired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello: "With the addition of Rich Scangarello as our offensive coordinator, we're getting an experienced coach who was a trusted and valued assistant with Kyle Shanahan for three seasons. He worked wonders with all the quarterbacks who started for San Francisco during the previous two years as quarterbacks coach. With his background and knowledge, it's the perfect time for Rich to be an offensive coordinator in the NFL. I find this opportunity for Rich very similar to when I first became a defensive coordinator many years ago, and he is ready to take this step in his career." Scangarello certainly has some work to do given since 2005 the highest a Broncos team without Peyton Manning at quarterback has finished in scoring is 16th in 2008 — Mike Shanahan's last season as coach.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio continues to fill out his coaching staff and now has secured his offensive and defensive play-callers over the last two days. San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello formally agreed to his deal to be the Broncos offensive coordinator this afternoon while Ed Donatell agreed Tuesday to be the team's defensive coordinator. Scangarello will be the Broncos' fourth different offensive coordinator in the last four seasons.

What do Broncos need to do to fix their offense?

Without Peyton Manning, the Broncos have been middling to bad on offense. Inconsistency, QB issues and scheme deficiencies should be first to be fixed.

Denver HC Fangio adds Donatell as D-coordinator

The Broncos have hired former Bears defensive backs coach Ed Donatell to be their new defensive coordinator. Donatell's four-year run in Chicago coincided with head coach Vic Fangio's stint as Chicago's DC before his hiring in Denver last week.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio on naming Ed Donatell as the team's defensive coordinator: "Ed's been an integral part of top-10 defenses for six of the last eight seasons in two different places, and he's a great fit to be our defensive coordinator. Having worked very closely with him for a number of years, Ed has a strong understanding of the entire defense from the front end to the back end with the defensive backs being his specialty. He's a very good teacher and believes in the fundamentals in the classroom and on the field. We're thrilled to add Ed to our coaching staff and welcome him back to the Broncos." It is Donatell's third stint with the Broncos — he was the team's secondary coach from 1995-1999 and in 2010.

If Broncos coach Vic Fangio hires Ed Donatell as his defensive coordinator — and Fangio would like to given Donatell is scheduled to formally interview today — Donatell will be no stranger to many with the team given it would be Donatell's third stint with the Broncos. Donatell was Mike Shanahan's secondary coach from 1995-1999 and he was Josh McDaniels' secondary coach in 2010.

Munchak agrees to be Broncos' O-line coach

Mike Munchak has left the Steelers to join Vic Fangio's staff in Denver as offensive line coach. Munchak was a finalist for the Broncos' head-coaching job. Denver named Fangio to that position on Thursday.

Newly-hired Broncos coach Vic Fangio continues to fill in his coaching staff. Mike Munchak has agreed to terms to the team's offensive line coach and while they were initially denied permission to interview 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello to be offensive coordinator, Broncos president of football operations/general manager John Elway and 49ers general manager John Lynch have been in contact and trying to work something out so Scangarello could join Fangio's staff.

Super Bowl XXXII: Elway's quest for title complete (1:06)

New Broncos coach Vic Fangio Thursday on what he said to John Elway during the interview process when Elway asked him what his plans were for the offense: “We talked about an offensive philosophy and I believe in balance. But, with balance (what) immediately comes to your mind is run and pass. There are other things that need to be balanced in offensive play. Do you throw it short, intermediate or deep? Do you run in inside, outside or have deceptives? Do you run gap schemes and zone schemes? Are you play-action, movement passing game? When I say balance, I'm not necessarily talking about how many runs and how many passes. You need to have balance within your passing game and in your running game. I know that from having to defend it. That's what we're looking to do.”

Broncos' Fangio vows to prevent 'death by inches'

Newly minted Broncos coach Vic Fangio decisively put his stamp on his expectations with a phrase that just might have gotten him, at age 60, the first head-coaching job of his career.

Jeff Legwold ESPN Senior Writer

As it goes whenever a new coach is introduced, there are plenty of hopes and expectations unveiled for the new staff. But Broncos when president of football operations/general manager John Elway was asked what he expected of Vic Fangio and the new staff in 2019 he offered a glimpse of why Fangio was his choice -- “Win, that's our job … The bottom line is we want to get this thing turned around, back on track, get out there and play disciplined football and play like we're capable of playing. And I think we've got the guy to make that happen and I'm excited to watch him work.''
