BOX SCORE
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ San Diego third baseman Phil Nevin sprained an ankle Tuesday as the Padres beat the Oakland Athletics 6-3. Nevin turned the outside of his right ankle when he slipped on wet grass during a rundown play in the third. He left the game immediately and was taken for precautionary X-rays, which were negative. He will be evaluated again Wednesday. "This is nothing new for me," Nevin said. "I've dislocated this ankle and broken the other one. I heard a pop, but that was just the ligaments stretching." Nevin's replacement, Ed Sprague, hit a two-run homer off Omar Olivares in the third inning for the Padres' first runs. Sprague, in camp as a non-roster invitee but certain to make the roster, finished 2-for-3 with the two RBIs. "I'm Wally Pipp already," Nevin joked. The Padres had allowed an average of 10.3 runs in their previous three games, San Diego starter Matt Clement allowed two hits in four shutout innings, striking out three. Olivares lasted 2 2-3 innings and allowed four hits, including the two-run homer. He struck out three. The Padres stretched their lead to 3-0 when Eric Owens doubled home Carlos Hernandez off Doug Johns in the fourth. Olmedo Saenz, who was 3-for-3, homered off Woody Williams in the sixth. The Athletics then tied it with two runs in the eighth against winner Domingo Guzman. Outfielder Mario Encarnacion tripled and Terrance Long and Greg Martinez hit back-to-back RBI doubles with two outs. The Padres responded with three runs in the bottom of the eighth off loser Chad Harville. Owens, George Williams and Kory DeHaan, acquired in December's major league draft, all had RBI singles.
