MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers look to follow their impressive Sunday win over the New York Knicks and cap their five-game road trip with a victory against the Miami Heat tonight.
O'Neal (29.0 ppg) passed Philadelphia 76ers phenom Allen Iverson by three-hundredths of a point in his attempt to win the scoring title for the first time since 1994. Last season, Iverson edged the 7-foot-1 center in the scoring race. O'Neal, who has reached 40 points three times in his last four games, will face Heat All-Star center Alonzo Mourning tonight. O'Neal had 17 points and 11 rebounds while Mourning recorded 21 points and nine rebounds in the Lakers' 93-80 win over the Heat on March 5 at Los Angeles. Kobe Bryant had 24 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in Sunday's win at New York, bouncing back from a season-low seven-point performance on 2-of-10 shooting in Friday's victory at Detroit. Los Angeles has a comfortable 4½-game lead over Portland for the best record in the NBA and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. The Heat will have a tough time extending their franchise-record win streak at home. They have won 13 straight here -- the most in the league -- since a loss to lowly Chicago on Jan. 18. With a win tonight, Miami can extend its winning streak to a season-high six games. The Heat have a two-game lead over the Knicks for the Atlantic Division lead and trail East-leading Indiana by only three with 13 games remaining. Jamal Mashburn scored the game-winning basket with less than
three seconds left to lift Miami to a 92-90 overtime triumph in
Cleveland on Saturday. Mourning fouled out in only 24 minutes
of action and scored just four points.
