WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Calgary Flames hope to move four
games over .500 for the first time in almost five years when
they battle the red-hot Washington Capitals tonight.
The Flames continue to rule in overtime after defeating Boston on Monday, 4-3, extending their own NHL record with 10 overtime victories this season. Marc Savard got the game-winner at 1:56 of the extra period to give Calgary its 10th win in 16 overtime games this season (10-1-5), including a 4-1-2 mark on the road. The Flames played two overtime games with Washington last season, winning one and skating to a scoreless deadlock in the other. Calgary has won consecutive games and six of seven to move within four points of Colorado in the Northwest Division race. Washington extended its unbeaten streak to a season-high eight games with Monday's 8-2 pounding of Tampa Bay. Peter Bondra and Chris Simon each scored twice for the Capitals, who are 7-0-1 in their last eight. Simon has lent a helping hand during the streak, producing consecutive multi-goal games and scoring five times in the last four. His 15 goals this season are one short of a career high established in the 1995-96 campaign. Goaltender Olaf Kolzig has been between the pipes in each of the games during the streak, allowing only 15 goals. Kolzig's 18 wins tie him with Philadelphia's John Vanbiesbrouck for fifth in the NHL. Washington's surge has moved it into sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The Capitals are 3-1-1 in their last five home games against Calgary.
