SUNRISE, Florida -- The New Jersey Devils put their four-game winning streak on the line Wednesday night when they begin a four-game road trip against Pavel Bure and the Florida Panthers.
New Jersey, which leads the NHL with 68 points, has only lost once in 14 games (11-1-2) and has scored at least four goals in each of the games during the winning streak. Patrik Elias is one of the hottest players in the NHL, riding a club-record 13-game points streak while posting consecutive multi-goal games. He has recorded 14 goals and eight assists during the stretch while excelling on the top line with Jason Arnott and Petr Sykora. They have 23 goals and 52 points over the last 14 games. Martin Brodeur has won nine straight starts and is 11-0-2 over his last 13. He is 29-9-5 this season and has his sights set on the NHL single-season record of 47 wins set by Bernie Parent of Philadelphia in 1973-74. New Jersey is 3-0-3 in its last six games against Florida, including a 2-0-2 mark last season. Florida has been playing almost as well as New Jersey, posting a 6-1-1 mark over the last eight to forge a tie with Toronto and Detroit for second in the league standings with 63 points. The Panthers have gone into overtime in consecutive games, tying Atlanta, 3-3, last Friday before a 4-3 triumph the next night against Boston on Bure's second goal of the game. Bure continues to amaze. He scored his 300th goal in the second
period and his 301st in overtime on Saturday and is tied with
Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr for the league lead with 34 in just 39
games -- three less than Jagr. The Panthers are 20-1-2 in games
when Bure scores a goal.
