ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The New York Islanders try to
build on Saturday's win tonight when they begin a three-game
western road swing against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
The Islanders continue to be the NHL's bottom-feeder with 29 points and are two behind the expansion Atlanta Thrashers in the battle to avoid the league's cellar. Atlanta hosts Phoenix tonight. New York is the only club in the league not to reach the century mark in goals (98) and has not scored more than three in a game since January 8. The Isles have only tallied twice in the last three, both coming on Saturday. New York has converted just 4-of-68 chances with the extra man in its last 17 games and is the league's second-worst team in that category at 10.4 percent (18-for-173). Anaheim rallied from an early deficit on Saturday, but it was not enough as the Ducks dropped a 3-2 decision at San Jose on Saturday. The Ducks are 2-9-2 in their last 13 games and sit in the Pacific Division cellar with 47 points. Paul Kariya continued his torrid scoring for Anaheim with a pair of goals in a 2:32 span on Saturday, giving the All-Star left wing five goals in his last three games and a team-leading 25 this season. Karyia has a goal and four assists in six career games against New York. The teams skated to a pair of 2-2 ties last season. Anaheim is unbeaten in its last three games against New York, but the Islanders are 1-0-3 in their last four at the Pond.
