PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The struggling Pittsburgh Penguins seek
their first win on their four-game homestand tonight when they
host the lowly Atlanta Thrashers.
The skid has dropped Pittsburgh two points behind Boston in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, although the Penguins have three games in hand on the Bruins. Pittsburgh is just one point ahead of 10th-place Carolina. Pittsburgh is 1-2-1 without All-Star Jaromir Jagr in the lineup, which follows a three-game losing streak with the game's top offensive force on the ice. Jagr, the NHL's leading scorer with 74 points, remains day-to-day with a rib injury. Atlanta also is struggling and brings a five-game winless streak (0-3-2) into tonight's contest. The Thrashers are coming off a 6-3 setback to the New York Rangers on Monday, which followed an impressive 3-3 tie with Florida three nights earlier. Atlanta was supposed to host Phoenix on Wednedsay, but the game was postponed because the Coyotes could not get out of North Carolina due to a blizzard that dumped 20 inches of snow in parts of the state. The expansion Thrashers are the second-worst team in the NHL with 31 points, two ahead of the New York Islanders. Goaltender Norm Maracle allowed five goals on 16 shots Monday and has been pulled in each of his last two appearances. Rookie Scott Fankhouser may get the start tonight after stopping 19 of 20 shots in relief on Monday. Rookie Patrik Stefan, the top pick in last year's draft, is probable for tonight after suffering a groin strain during Monday's loss. The same cannot be said for rookie defenseman Petr Buzek, who is expected to miss two more games with the same injury.
