Tony Bennett coveted a point guard in the Class of 2013. Actually, he’s coveted a true point since taking over the reigns of the Virginia program. Jontel Evans has performed admirably but his DNA is that of a defensive player. Devon Hall (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry), Virginia’s Sunday morning pledge, thrives on offense.

Bennett hosted Hall on campus over the weekend and accepted a commitment from a point guard with size and passing acumen. Hall was one of the standout points at last month’s Nike Elite 100, a camp for underclassmen.

Hall is no longer an underclassman. As a sophomore, the Boo Williams point man reclassified. Bennett convinced him Virginia had playing time available and a need for his services. Hall responded by agreeing to re-enter the Class of 2013. “They really wanted me bad and they said they needed me badly,” Hall said. “They told me I have a great shot to come in and play 30 minutes a game. They did tell me I have to work for it, but I’ll have a chance.”

Next spring, when Hall graduates, he’ll do so as a 17-year old senior. In a sense, classifying made him older by a basketball year but younger in age. He’s committing himself to Bennett, who in turn will put him on the floor out of necessity. It’s an arrangement that will work out. Hall should be fully capable of commanding a high-major team and his ability to pass makes him qualified to be Bennett’s first big-time asset at the position.

Hall’s brother, Mark Hall, will play football for the Cavaliers next season.
