A little over a year ago, Chester (Va.) Miller School small forward Andrew White told ESPN that Georgetown was his dream school. On Friday, he put the Hoyas on the backburner and committed to the Kansas Jayhawks on a local TV station.

“For the way I play basketball, I think I’ll be able to step in as a freshman and play minutes,” White said on NBC12.com. White chose the Jayhawks over the Hoyas, Richmond, NC State, Virginia Tech, George Mason and Cincinnati.

White, ESPNU’s No. 51 overall recruit in the Class of 2012, is Kansas’ fifth overall commitment. He joins No. 37 Perry Ellis (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Heights), Anrio Adams (Seattle, Wash./Rainier Beach), Landen Lucas (Portland, Ore./Westview) and Zach Peters (Plano, Tex./Prestonwood Christian). The Kansas recruiting class moves into No. 20 in the class rankings.

White’s recruitment has been one that put college coaches on a roller coaster and gave them a long ride. Just last weekend, Georgetown dispatched an assistant coach to Charlotte to see him play. The Hoyas were all in on White as assistant Kenya Hunter came straight from Maui. Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin was there as well, in addition to Richmond assistant Jaml Brunt. Why do I mention this? Well, just six days ago most of the schools on White’s list felt like they had a chance. However, the rumblings regarding Kansas were too strong. Since the end of the early signing period, the Jayhawks were tagged as the clubhouse leader.

In White, KU has added a big perimeter player. In the last 15 months, White elevated his game from mid-major player to high-major commodity. The big reason for his ascension has been a commitment to working on his game and his deft shooting touch.

White’s commitment means 87 ESPNU’s 100 highest ranked players have either committed or signed.
