In the last two weeks, Auburn picked up a commitment from four-star quarterback Woody Barrett and Alabama landed fellow ESPN 300 signal caller Jalen Hurts. In all, 10 of the 14 SEC teams now have a quarterback committed for 2016.

That got us thinking. Which SEC team currently has the most important quarterback commitment for 2016? It sounds like the perfect debate topic for this week’s Take Two.

Derek Tyson: There are several quality quarterbacks committed to SEC schools, so choosing the most important one was pretty difficult. There is no doubt a case could be made for Jacob Eason (Georgia), Shea Patterson (Ole Miss) or even Brandon McIlwain (South Carolina), but I decided to go with 6-foot-6, 211-pound quarterback Feleipè Franks, who is committed to LSU.

The strong-armed signal-caller, who is ranked as the 55th-best player in the ESPN 300, committed to LSU over a year ago and has very similar skills to Zach Mettenberger. Yes, I realize Mettenberger wasn’t necessarily all-world at LSU, but he certainly flourished in his second year under offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

Quarterback play, or lack thereof, has seemingly been the Achilles heel for LSU under Les Miles. JaMarcus Russell played pretty well in his last two years under Miles and led the Tigers to a 25-4 record as a starter, but he was recruited and signed by former LSU coach Nick Saban. Matt Flynn led LSU to a national title, but that came on the strength of a tough defense and a steady running game.

Other than the guys listed above, and despite Cameron’s extensive experience with pocket passers in the NFL, LSU has tended to target dual-threat quarterbacks in recruiting. Currently LSU has two dual threat quarterbacks sitting atop the depth chart in Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings and signed another dual-threat quarterback Justin McMillan in last year’s class. There is no question Harris has the talent to be a very good quarterback, but we have yet to see the production.

Franks has all the physical tools to be a successful quarterback on the next level and he has been a very productive high school player. As a junior he threw for 2,200 yards and 28 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. Even at 6-foot-6, Franks has deceptive athletic ability. In addition to his passing stats, he also rushed for 425 yards and three touchdowns in his junior season.

With the receiving targets LSU has been stockpiling — Malachi Dupre, Trey Quinn, Tyron Johnson and Brandon Martin -- just to name a few, the Tigers need a quarterback who can challenge a defense in the Which SEC team has biggest QB commitment for 2016? and there is no question Franks has the ability to do that. He could be the next LSU quarterback to really flourish under Cameron.

Greg Ostendorf: It’s hard to argue with the recruiting expert on this one. And he’s right, LSU needs a quarterback about as bad as anybody in the SEC right now. But from Russell to Jordan Jefferson to Jerrard Randall to Harris, the Tigers are accustomed to landing top signal callers.

You know who doesn’t typically sign four- and five-star quarterbacks? Ole Miss. And yet, here are the Rebels with a commitment from Patterson, the No. 4 pocket passer in the country and the No. 38 player overall in the ESPN 300. The last quarterback that good to sign with Ole Miss had the last name Manning, and the best part is that Hugh Freeze and his staff plucked him out of LSU’s own backyard.

First, let’s give credit where credit is due. Freeze has shown he can recruit -- that heralded 2013 class has at least four potential first-round picks and three of those four are projected to go in the top 10 -- but he’s yet to land an elite signal caller, at least not one from the high school level. Ryan Buchanan was a solid pickup and he might very well win the starting job this season, but he wasn’t the caliber of player that Patterson is when he came out.

Simply put, Patterson is a program-changer. The guy possesses a strong arm, a quick release, and he’s as accurate as any quarterback in the 2016 class. There’s a reason he had offers from schools like Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas and USC. And that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Is he the best quarterback currently committed to an SEC school? That’s hard to say, especially with the five-star pledge Mark Richt has on board at Georgia. But Patterson’s commitment is critical to an Ole Miss program that hasn’t won a conference title since 1963. It gives the Rebels credibility, and it gives them staying power. Freeze changed the game when he signed that 2013 class. With 14 players already committed, including Patterson and six others ranked in the ESPN 300, he could do it again in 2016.
