Instant impact recruit: North Carolina Tar Heels

From Deshaun Watson to Dexter Lawrence, teams are winning with true freshmen these days. So, which incoming ACC freshmen will make major contributions for their team in 2017? We’re picking our favorites this week.

Next up, North Carolina.

Recruit: Michael Carter, No. 34 running back

Stars: Four

How he got to North Carolina: The Navarre, Florida native was another great addition out of the Sunshine State for Larry Fedora and Co. He had offers from Florida, FIU and FAU closer to home, but UNC proved to be the right fit.

Why he’ll make an impact: To be sure, Carter has talent. At 5-foot-10 and 193 pounds, he plays bigger than his frame suggests, and he has the elusiveness to draw some comparisons to the departed T.J. Logan in the Carolina backfield.

But more than anything, the reason to bet on big things from Carter in 2017 is simple necessity.

When Ty’Son Williams transferred prior to last season and Elijah Hood surprised the Heels by departing for the NFL at the end of the year, it left the depth chart virtually empty.

Given the turnover in the passing game, too, Fedora would love to see some serious production from Carter and fellow 2017 signee Antwuan Branch early as the offense settles.

Coach quote: “They don’t have a choice, do they? They’ve got to come in and play for us next year. Along with Jordon Brown, that’s what we have. They know right now. They’re preparing in their minds.”
