World Cup moments - Oliseh magic downs Spain

Nigeria may never have reached the World Cup quarterfinals in any of their five appearances in the Mundial to date, but they produced one of Africa's greatest goals in the tournament.

The Super Eagles' victory over Spain in the 1998 World Cup is one of several great African giant-killings in the history of the competition. While it doesn't belong in the same category as Cameroon's victory over Argentina or Senegal's shock win against France, it was nonetheless a triumph that reverberated around the globe.

Spain in 1998 weren't the dominant force they've been in more recent tournaments, but they were nonetheless a team packed with talent from some of Europe's giants.

Nigeria, by contrast, lacked a little of the panache of the Golden Generation of 1994, having missed out on both the 1996 and the 1998 African Cup of Nations tournaments, but there was arguably a greater balance about the side that Bora Milutinovic took to France.

One of the most exciting talents in that side was 23-year-old midfielder Sunday Oliseh, who headed into the tournament on the back of an Eredivisie-winning campaign with Ajax.

His winner against Spain was surely the highlight of his career, as the midfield powerhouse picked up a headed clearance from Fernando Hierro about 30 yards away from Andoni Zubizarreta's goal.

Oliseh didn't hesitate, catching the loose ball beautifully and slamming a thunderous right-footed effort into the Spaniard's net - leaving the keeper, who had earlier scored an own-goal, with no chance.

Nigeria ultimately topped their group, but were outclassed by a fine Danish side in an anticlimactic Last 16 defeat in front of 77,000 at the Stade de France.

Oliseh, who retired at 31, was never again to grace a World Cup, after being omitted from the 2002 squad due to a falling-out with the club's officials.
