Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife, the singer Ciara Harris, have been spending their vacation in South Africa, and on Wednesday took part in a rhino microchipping trip outside Cape Town, in an effort to combat poaching.
The pair posted of their adventure on Instagram, dubbing the two rhinos they helped tag 'Princess' and 'Zahir', named after the couple's children.
"It's an important task because over 5,000+ Rhinos have been killed by poachers in the past 6 years. We all need to play a part in an effort to Save the Rhinos in Africa from being wiped off the earth," the athlete wrote.
They're not the first celebrities to get involved in conservation efforts, with cricketers Kevin Pietersen and Mark Boucher vocal proponents of rhino rescue, and the likes of actor Leonardo DiCaprio making conservation a large part of his celebrity impact.
The poaching of black rhinos for their horns has seen the animals' numbers dwindle to a fraction of the 100,000 at the start of the 20th century, with the horns being sold to predominantly Asian countries, under the belief that the ground-up horns will help cure illness and increase virility.
Prior to their safari outing, the Wilsons spent time in Cape Town proper, including introducing the NFL version of football to local children, more familiar with soccer, in the Langa area.
"So dope teaching these young boys in Africa at the nearby Township how to play @NFL Football for the first time ever!" the quarterback, ranked 11th on this year's NFL Top 100, wrote.
