Leicester City's Thai monk prayed for title during Chelsea vs. Tottenham

One of the Buddhist monks who blessed Leicester City's players and stadium earlier this season said he prayed through the night for the club's astonishing Premier League triumph.

The Foxes clinched the 2015-16 title when their nearest challengers Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 2-2 draw by Chelsea on Sunday night.

Phra Prommangkalachan is one of a handful of monks who has travelled with Leicester chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha to the club's King Power Stadium in recent months.

"I prayed for them from 2 a.m. till 4 a.m. (Bangkok time, during the Chelsea-Spurs match) but the victory does not come from me... it's from the team and the goodness of the owner," he told AFP.

As part of attempts to bring good fortune to Leicester, monks blessed the pitch at King Power Stadium and handed out lucky charms to players. Phra, 64, hung amulets around players' necks and gave them fabric talismans.

Somehow, Leicester City have turned a 14th-place finish and relegation battle last season into their first English top-flight title this term, clinched with two games to spare.

"(Vichai) brought monks there to pray for auspiciousness and luck in the game, for the management team and the players," Phra told AFP in March.

"I'm not sure if they understood what I explained to them about it, but they knew that it would bring them luck."

Leicester will be presented with the Premier League trophy after Sunday's home game against Everton.
