WOLVERHAMPTON, England -- Manchester United lost at Molineux for the second time in three weeks as Wolves put a dent in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's top-four hopes on Tuesday. Wolves recorded a second win over United in the same season for the first time since 1980 as they recovered from Scott McTominay's opener through Diogo Jota and a calamitous Chris Smalling own goal to claim a 2-1 victory.
Solskjaer saw Ashley Young pick up the first red card of his United career -- the 100th issued by Mike Dean in the Premier League -- with the score an 1-1 after he was shown two yellow cards in the space of five minutes in the second half for two challenges on Jota.
After a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in September, it is the first time United have failed to beat a newly promoted team in a season since taking one point from two games against Manchester City in 2002-03. United could have finished the night third in the Premier League table, but after another miserable night in the Black Country, Solskjaer's team are outside the top four with just six games remaining.
Positives
McTominay scored his first senior goal in his 41st appearance with a fantastic strike that flew past Rui Patricio and into the far corner. He can finish, and occasionally played as an emergency striker for the Under-23s. The midfielder was one to benefit from Solskjaer's changes and took his chance. He might have scored a second but for a good save from Patricio.
Negatives
United's confidence is fragile. When the flow of the game is going their way, they look slick and dangerous, but when momentum shifts they struggle to change it. They should have been 3-0 up after 20 minutes, but once Jota got the equaliser -- almost out of nothing -- Wolves were the better team.

6 -- The Norwegian made six changes to his team despite having a free weekend ahead of Barcelona's visit to Old Trafford next week and switched his system to a five-man defence, which included Young as the third centre-back. United started well but fell apart after the equaliser, and Young's red card ruined any chance of trying to win the game before the winner came 13 minutes from time.

GK David De Gea, 4 -- He didn't do Fred any favours with his pass into midfield before Jota's goal and flapped when under pressure as Wolves scored their second.
DF Ashley Young, 4 -- Asked to play in an unfamiliar position on the right side of the back three. Will be disappointed to have played Jota onside for Wolves' equaliser and then picked up two bookings in five minutes early in the second half.
DF Victor Lindelof, 6 -- Returned to the team after missing the win over Watford. United benefitted from having him back to pass the ball out of defence.
DF Chris Smalling, 6 -- Won a lot in the air as usual but was left exposed for Wolves' equaliser in the first half and should have done more to stop Wolves going in front.
DF Luke Shaw, 6 -- Man of the match against Watford but was stopped going forward by Wolves. Picked up his 10th booking and will miss the next two games against West Ham and Everton.
DF Diogo Dalot, 6 -- Struggled defensively but was good when he was attacking. Inviting cross for Romelu Lukaku in the first five minutes that the Belgian should have put away.
MF Scott McTominay, 7 -- Making his first start since his heroics in Paris. Scored his first goal as a professional with a drilled effort into the corner from 25 yards to put United ahead.
MF Fred, 6 -- Starting for the first time since the defeat to Arsenal. He was doing all right until he got caught on the ball by Joao Moutinho in the build-up to Wolves' equaliser.
MF Paul Pogba, 5 -- The Frenchman has great games and average games, and this was one of his nights when nothing seemed to come off.
FW Jesse Lingard, 5 -- Had a shot after five seconds and should have scored with a free header after a clever cross from Lukaku. Pushed back into midfield after Young's red card.
FW Romelu Lukaku, 6 -- Started up front with Marcus Rashford ruled out through illness. Should have scored with a header in the opening five minutes but created two good chances with crosses from the left.
