By the numbers: Messi hits 50, De Gea notches up 100

What a weekend of football.

Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to get substituted as Maurizio Sarri absolutely lost his plot on the touchline (as would be expected of anyone in his situation) and Chelsea went on to lose 3-4 on penalties to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. Liverpool and Manchester United hobbled their way to an uninspiring 0-0 draw, meaning the Merseysiders now lead City by a point atop the Premier League. Arsenal beat Southampton 2-0 to climb a point over United and into fourth. Paulo Dybala's second-half rescue act meant Juventus eked out a 1-0 win over Bologna away and maintained their 13-point advantage atop Serie A.

Over in the Sanchez Pizjuan, Sevilla looked to have the better of Barcelona, before, well, Lionel Messi happened -- and the game ended 2-4 in favour of the visitors. They maintain a seven-point lead over Atletico Madrid atop La Liga.

Here, then, are the best stats from the weekend:

50

Where else would we start? With his left-foot-volley, right-foot-curler, cute-little-dink combo, Lionel Messi now has 50 hat-tricks in his career. That includes 44 for Barcelona (highest in La Liga history, tied -- obviously -- with Cristiano Ronaldo).

On those 50 occasions, his team have won 49 times and drawn once. And, since you asked, here's how Ronaldo's teams have done when he's scored a hat-trick - 50 wins, 1 draw, 0 Losses.

100

David De Gea is the seventh goalkeeper to keep 100 Premier League clean sheets for a single team, and the second for Manchester United, after Peter Schmeichel.

2

Manchester City have become quite good at penalties. The last two League Cup finals to go to a shootout have been won by them, and they have now won their last six penalty shootouts.

4

United vs. Liverpool was the tale of the injured. There were four first-half substitutions (Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, and Roberto Firmino all hobbled off), the first time that's happened since Wigan Athletic hosted Fulham in February 2009.

4

There might be a lot still to be sorted at Arsenal, but Alexandre Lacazette's play doesn't seem to be one of them. The Frenchman has become the first Gunner to score in four consecutive home league games, since Robin van Persie in March 2012.

71

Roy Hodgson became the oldest manager to take charge of a Premier League game when he led his Crystal Palace side out on Saturday -- aged 71 years, 198 days. The old master still has some tricks left in him - his team ran out 4-1 winners at Leicester City, a result that caused Hodgson's opposite number, Claude Puel, his job.

14

With their 2-0 loss to Newcastle United on Saturday, Huddersfield have now scored the fewest goals (14) and lost the most league games (19) among all the 98 clubs in Europe's top 5 leagues. Just not their season, is it?

15

Valencia are the first team in La Liga history to draw 15 games after the opening 25 league match days. They drew 1-1 with Leganes on Sunday and are ninth in the table with a record of 6 wins, 15 draws, 4 losses.

18

Jadon Sancho has now contributed to 18 goals (10 goals + 8 assists) in the Bundesliga this season, the second most by an 18-year-old in Europe's Top 5 leagues since 2010-11.

Who has the most? Unsurprisingly, it's Kylian Mbappe -- with 23 (15 goals, 8 assists) in 2016-17.

Weird statistic of the weekend

As he helped Watford eviscerate Cardiff City 5-1, Gerard Deulofeu became only the third player to score a Premier League hat-trick on a Friday. The ones before him? Dean Windass (in April 2000) and Thierry Henry (two in April 2004).
