Roberto Firmino injury not as bad as feared, could face Everton - Klopp

LIVERPOOL, England -- Jurgen Klopp has said Roberto Firmino avoided a serious injury against Manchester United and has a "big chance" of featuring in Sunday's Merseyside derby.

Firmino left Old Trafford on crutches after injuring his ankle in the first half of last Sunday's goalless draw.

While the Brazilian faces a race against time to be fit for Wednesday's encounter with Watford, he is more likely play against Everton.

"He looks good, we were obviously lucky," Klopp said a news conference on Tuesday. "It is not as serous as we thought in the first moment, but if Bobby leaves the pitch it is not a good sign.

"We play tomorrow and it will be very close for that, but there's still a chance for the derby [on Sunday]. Because it's Bobby, I would say 'yes [there is a chance for Watford]', but I don't know if I would use that chance.

"Writing Bobby off is a big mistake because he recovers very quick."

Daniel Sturridge replaced the injured Firmino against United to make his 15th substitute appearance of the season.

If Firmino cannot play against Watford, Klopp has Sturridge, Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri as his reserve final third options, although the trio only have 14 Premier League starts between them in 2018-19.

"That's the nature of playing for a club like Liverpool -- you have a few players that don't have 500,000 minutes before they start the next game," Klopp said. "But they still have a lot of quality.

"If we have to change a few things, we will change. We changed a couple of things during the season, but obviously Bobby was pretty much always involved. That's not the case this time.

"But we have the options which we will choose for the start, one of them and, maybe during the game, a second one.

"If there's anything good in [the situation] it's that Watford have no clue what we will do, so we will not talk about that."

Naby Keita has been suffering from illness but is expected to return to Melwood on Tuesday, while Dejan Lovren is "getting closer" to a return from his hamstring injury, according to Klopp.
