Match Commentary

81'23-12 End of second half
80'And that concludes our live coverage of the second Test -- stay with us for more reaction to this match across ESPN, and join us for next week's match in Cape Town, where England will attempt to stop this five/six-match losing skid, and the Springboks will look to complete the clean sweep.
80'And now Tendai Mtawarira is presented with a golden cap for his 100th cap -- the sixth Springbok to do so and the eighth prop across world rugby. His kids are with him on the stage and wearing lovely golden gillets. A great moment all round. Put on the spot, his daughter tells the crowd: "I'm happy." She's not alone.
80'South Africa captain Siya Kolisi: "It was really tough. The most important thing was the people of Bloemfontein coming out to support us. I don't know what happened [with the slow start] but the most important thing was the character we showed to keep on fighting."
80'Owen Farrell: "We lost momentum in the second half of the first half yet again. We have to look back on that. We have to learn from it. We lost composure in some big moments. We need to learn our lessons now and start winning now."
80'Duane Vermeulen is named man of the match. "I'm really tired actually. The boys dug deep in the last part of the game. It's actually my first Test here, I'm very happy to be back, thanks to everyone who came out to support the guys."
80'Ben Youngs to Sky Sports: "We're really disappointed."

He then cuts the interview short and runs away, back to a huddle for the post-match presentations. That's a very strange incident, when usually players even from the losing team conduct interviews after the game for broadcasters. England not coming out of this tour well in anyone's eyes.
80'Tendai Mtawarira, on the occasion of his 100th cap, speaking to Sky Sports after the match: "I was a little scared after the first couple of minutes but we were composed and we came back nicely.

"It is one of the most memorable days in my career. I'm so proud my family was here to witness it."
80'It's two out of two for Rassie Erasmus and birthday boy, captain Siya Kolisi.

It's five in five for Eddie Jones and England though -- five Test defeats in succession, and six in total if you count the uncapped Barbarians match at the end of May. Troubling times for England with the World Cup looming large just 15 months away.
80'SOUTH AFRICA WIN THE TEST SERIES, TAKING AN UNASSAILABLE 2-0 LEAD IN THE THREE-MATCH SERIES.
80'"Use it," screams referee Poite. The Springboks oblige. They're not using it very far though. They're eeking out the seconds. There goes the horn. Willie le Roux punts to touch. GAME OVER! SERIES WON!
80'Into the last minute or normal time. South Africa were sent reeling in that scrum but they've regrouped and are bleeding the clock phase by phase.
79'Now they've got it out. May making good yards. It's inside to Itoje, who dunks a pass to Launchbury which is terrible and hits off Launchbury's hands and to the turf. That will be a South Africa scrum, and they will see this to a conclusion from here. South Africa are going to seal the Test series with a match to spare.
78'This scrum has taken far too long from England's point of view. They've lost a minute or more just waiting to put the ball in. There's going to be a third attempt to set this scrum. This match is dripping away, reset by reset.
76'England have it but Nkosi intercepts -- and drops it. The ball is shoveled backwards and Cipriani uses his feet well to keep the ball alive, but it's all coming back for the knock on by Nkosi.
76'England kick for touch. They need a converted try. Fast.
75'Here they come now. The 14 men aren't giving this up. Daly the man who made the yards there. Harry Williams carries forward. Cipriani with a kick through and it's beautifully judged, forcing Le Roux to carry it out and we'll go back for a penalty against Van der Merwe.
75'Substitute on - Ivan van Zyl , South Africa
75'Player substituted - Faf de Klerk , South Africa
73'South Africa can attack again though. Here comes Nkosi, super footwork and pace and he lays it off in the tackle to Kitshoff. De Klerk pulling the strings again. To Le Roux. To Vermeulen. Ball is out though and Solomona clears his lines. England are at the wrong end of the field from their point of view though.
73'Substitute on - Ben Spencer , England
73'Player substituted - Ben Youngs , England
72'Pollard is perfect so far today, four kicks from four attempts. It's four from five. He's missed that one, just stabbing it to the outside of the right post. That was the game right there. England still have a chance.
71'South Africa taking full advantage of their numerical superiority. De Allende making a key carry into England territory. They're 20 metres out from the England line. De Klerk working feverishly at every phase. But South Africa have been turned over. Illegally. It's the 12th penalty against England today. South Africa will take the points.
70'Yellow card for Hughes. He played the ball cynically on the ground. That, you would think, is that. England will play all but the last minute of this match with 14 men. Silly, silly stuff. Eddie Jones will be able to play the same record as last week in his post-match interviews. Bright start, dumb penalties, indiscipline. Defeat.
69'Lineout to England ten metres inside the South Africa half. Youngs to probe from the foot of a ruck in the middle of the field. Daly breaks through! He's inside the 22 witha super turn of pace and a couple of broken tackles. Cipriani takes a thumping hit as he tries to pass it wide and South Africa have the ball and a pending penalty. No advantage, penalty South Africa.
69'Yellow card - Nathan Hughes , England
68'Meanwhile, the lead has been extended to 11 points. It's 23 unanswered points for South Africa. They've done it again. What do England have in their locker? Anything?
67'South African captain Siya Kolisi goes off - he's had a fine 27th birthday. Notshe is on in his place. Here's Danny Cipriani as well - his first Test match since the pre-World Cup warm-ups in 2015. George Ford goes off.
67'23-12 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
67'Substitute on - Mark Wilson , England
67'Player substituted - Brad Shields , England
67'Substitute on - Denny Solomona , England
67'Player substituted - Mike Brown , England
67'Substitute on - Danny Cipriani , England
67'Player substituted - George Ford , England
66'Substitute on - Sikhumbuzo Notshe , South Africa
66'Player substituted - Siya Kolisi , South Africa
65'England eventually have to try to chip it through and South Africa cover up well. It's kicked long and Ford then gets into trouble and ships it to Brown who is no better off and eventually England concede a penalty. That was a mess from England. South Africa will take the points. They could all but seal it here.
64'England clear their lines and a drop under a high ball gifts them possession on halfway. Curry pushing forward, then Ford. Now Youngs to Itoje. They're over halfway. Ford to Farrell to Brown. No spaces coming though. Now Cowan-Dickie and Marler, the two substitutes, pushing on. Brown on the left flank now. Shields gets it and is driven back absolutely spectacularly by a couple of Boks tacklers. Great passage of play.
62'De Klerk told to use it. He does. To de Allende. Penalty against South Africa - England with a key turnover! Right on their own line. That might have saved the match. De Allende pinged for not releasing. Curry it seems was the man who choked that play up, alongside Slade and Farrell.
62'Great attack from the Springboks including superb hands from Dyantyi, and the chip through is covered by Daly but he carried it back and it will be a South Africa put-in five metres out. Same area of the field that resulted in a penalty try last time around.
62'Player substituted - Jamie George , England
62'Substitute on - Luke Cowan-Dickie , England
61'"Sweet dreams are made of this" by Eurythmics bursts out over the stadium PA. The musical choices are becoming ever more pointed.
60'And just as England look as though they're making good progress into South African territory, Itoje knocks on. It's been that kind of tour for the lock.
60'Substitute on - Jesse Kriel , South Africa
60'Player substituted - Lukhanyo Am , South Africa
59'South Africa try to push out of their own 22. Kick from Pollard from his own line. Daly grabs it right on the touchline. England will be able to counter. It looked like there was obstruction there but referee Poite isn't interested. A high ball from Ford -- and Le Roux takes that fantastically out of the air. Brilliant catch. That's alleviated the pressure and England will have to build again.
58'They for back for a penalty for England and Farrell again taps it into touch. Lineout. Itoje claims it. The push isn't there this time though, South Africa have done a great job of standing that up. They've won it. Penalty to South Africa. Ben Youngs lets out an expletive in frustration. That's a huge win for the Boks.
58'Player substituted - Mako Vunipola , England
58'Substitute on - Joe Marler , England
57'Itoje takes it at the lineout. Good drive from the maul, now Jamie George breaks forward. They're two metres short. England on the charge. TRY! Or is it?! That's going to be looked at you feel. It's BRAD SHIELDS! Shields is the man who got over the line but did he ground the ball properly. It looked as though he lost it. And he did. Great play from Franco Mostert who knocked it out of Shields hands as he lunged for the line. Hard lines for the New Zealan... I mean England forward.
56'George Ford loses the ball and we'll go back for an earlier penalty for offside against Nkosi. Farrell kicks to touch, shunning the three points again.
56'Player substituted - RG Snyman , South Africa
56'Substitute on - Jean-Luc du Preez , South Africa
55'Curry steals it at the lineout. England look to build. On to Brown by Slade. Nathan Hughes forward, now Itoje. England are in the South Africa 22.
54'Mark called by Dyantyi and he'll kick it out into touch - England take a quick one at the concession of 20 metres and that hasn't played out in their favour. It will now be a South Africa lineout at almost exactly the same point in the field that England should have had the throw 20 seconds earlier.
53'South Africa on the attack with Am bursting over halfway through the middle of the pitch. But the ball is thrown wide right by Vermeulen -- and straight into touch. He apologises and laughs ruefully.
52'Mike Brown fumbles another high ball. That tactic has been paying dividends for South Africa. Scrum to the Boks.
51'Player substituted - Bongi Mbonambi , South Africa
51'Substitute on - Akker van der Merwe , South Africa
51'Player substituted - Kyle Sinckler , England
51'Substitute on - Harry Williams , England
50''Beast' enjoyed that one. The TV replays show him going wild on the bench. His side lead by eight after the simple conversion. England reach for the bench, and so do the Springboks.
50'20-12 Penalty try
49'Another reset. Tom Curry thought that was a penalty against South Africa and England's ball. Not this time, Tom, but it might be soon. Meanwhile, Mako Vunipola has blood streaming from a head knock. Not quite sure why he's still on the field. Penalty South Africa. Sinckler couldn't keep down. The scrum rolls towards the line, England are all over the place, PENALTY TRY! That was desperate stuff in defence from England and they're in deep trouble now. This series is getting away from them.
48'Scrum to South Africa, five metres out. It's tough to get it started though, as the front row collapses. Ref Poite takes the opportunity to talk things through with the two packs, and the scrum moves a couple of yards to the left as the turf has given way and caused the collapse.
47'Lineout for South Africa as they decide not to take the points. Drive on! It's short by two metres. Kitshoff is over the line, but held up. Agony for South Africa. This is a key moment, you feel.
46'Kolisi forces a penalty out of England, chasing a kick and forcing England into not releasing the ball. It was Jonny May who lost out to the South Africa captain there, who was ably supported by Nkosi.
45'Ah, some rugby. Not much, as England's Ben Youngs takes the ball from the scrum and heaves it into touch. Mtawarira makes way -- that's his game over, and a fine performance on his 100th cap. Steven Kitshoff is on in his place.
45'Substitute on - Thomas du Toit , South Africa
45'Player substituted - Frans Malherbe , South Africa
45'Player substituted - Tendai Mtawarira , South Africa
45'Substitute on - Steven Kitshoff , South Africa
43'"All the things she said" by Tatu is played over the stadium PA. It's quite the disco in Bloemfontein when there's no rugby going on.
43'Now Vermeulen bursts away! He's clear and deep into the England half. He ships it to Dyantyi, the England defence regroups, and South Africa have to work through the phases. Vermeulen again is the man who takes them forward. Really encouraging stuff for the Springboks, but England hold out. Brad Shields the man at the bottom of the ruck, and he looks a little puffed after that flurry of action.
42'Brad Shields with a steal! He's nearly away before being ripped down on the left flank. Now South Africa try to switch wings and get the ball to Aphiwe Dyantyi.
41'Mike Brown is forced into retreat mode, great kick from De Klerk over the top and it's now a lineout for South Africa midway inside the England half.
41'The teams are back out for the second half - George Ford to kick off. We are back underway!
41'Player substituted - Billy Vunipola , England
41'Substitute on - Nathan Hughes , England
41'+113-12 End of first half
40'England looking to attack, knock-on advantage in their favour. The ball goes dead. That's halftime. A different game from last weekend, and yet oddly similar. England fired into an early lead with fine running rugby and two slick tries, but they trail by one point at the break thanks to determined rugby from the Springboks. What a great Test series this has been so far. Can South Africa seal it in the second half?
40'Billy Vunipola might be hurt. He's substituted with Nathan Hughes coming on for his 16th cap.
40'An England lineout goes too far and Mbonami charges forward. One last attack for South Africa. Nope, it's over. A penalty against Snyman for over-eagerness. Farrell kicks to touch and this will be the last play of the half.
40'13-12 Start of second half
39'Yep, it's easy. What a kick. It sails gloriously through the posts and England's decision not to take points a couple of minutes ago has really backfired. They trail, and another double-digit lead in South Africa has evaporated before halftime.
39'13-12 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
37'Another England penalty conceded - this time for not releasing the ball. South Africa have survived and now might even look to take the lead. Pollard is 10 metres inside his own half, but at altitude he's going to have a dig at the posts. It's not as far as Daly's 60 metre effort last weekend, this one is 49 metres. Easy, right?
36'England take the lineout rather than a shot at the posts, and they've made good progress towards the South Africa line. But Mako Vunipola turns it over! The gamble hasn't paid off and De Klerk boots it deep into touch. De Klerk was also the man who disrupted Mako enough to knock on.
35'Now England try to build. Launchbury coming forward. Lovely hands in the back, Daly on to Brown who is brought down. De Klerk might have hurt himself in a tackle there. Shields trying to push forward and there will be a penalty to England which Farrell will likely have a pop at points with. Tom Curry took a knock to the head and is receiving treatment. It was him and De Klerk who collided. Weirdly, De Klerk seems to have shrugged it off when he looked as though he'd caught the worst of it. "We didn't start the fire" by Billy Joel plays on the stadium PA.
34'Mbongeni Mbonami pinged for an early engagement in the scrum, and the put-in goes to England at the next scrum. Not much actually happening at the moment, almost as though the players need a breather at altitude.
32'Another up and under, and this time Billy Vunipola drops it for a knock on and a scrum for South Africa. Still inside the Boks' half, though.
32'They've been turned over at the lineout however and Farrell kicks a beauty deep into South African territory. Good work from the England captain after tremendous foraging by Billy Vunipola.
31'Elliot Daly makes a great effort to keep the penalty from going into touch, then punts it from a very tight angle and gives the ball away midway inside his own half. South Africa can build again.
30'Oh dear. Mako Vunipola has done something very stupid there. He slapped Pieter-Steph du Toit while he was lying at the bottom of the ruck. He's only going to get a ticking off. He's lucky there because that was about as dumb as an infringement can get. He was yellow-carded last weekend as well. Eddie Jones might be calling for him to come off anyway soon if he's not careful. That was insanely stupid.
30'Another up and under. Nkosi again the man on the chase. Brown again the man under it. He catches it, there's a penalty against England, and then another fight breaks out. Well, not really a fight but a lot of big men threatening to get really angry with each other by pulling their shirts and not throwing any punches -- because that would be stupid, wouldn't it. "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club plays on the stadium PA. No, I've no idea either...
30'Pollard lines up the three-pointer from 36 metres out. A swing of the right boot and that fair soars through the uprights. It's still rising as it heads into the stands. Three points.
29'10-12 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
28'Massive boot downfield from De Klerk. Into touch on the edge of the England 22. Pressure on again, and England cross at the lineout. Penalty South Africa and this one might be a look at the posts this time around.
27'De Klerk tries another huge up and under. Billy Vunipola shows Mike Brown how it is done with a lovely catch under pressure from Nkosi. It's clear South Africa fancy the up and under to Nkosi though.
26'De Klerk with a huge up and under from inside his own 22, Nkosi chases it and it's a fumble from Mike Brown, which bumbles out into touch. Lineout to South Africa. They're in the ascendancy here and that's got to be a worrying echo for England after last week.
25'
25'Pollard slots the conversion. England lead is cut to five.
25'7-12 Conversion - Handre Pollard , South Africa
24'Vermeulen has so much work to do when he scoops that ball up just inside the England 22. He beats one, two, three men, then beats another for a second time just for fun, then rumbles over the line with two men hanging on his back. What a try.
24'5-12 Try - Duane Vermeulen , South Africa
23'The Springboks are coming back, though. Victor Matfield, then De Allende pushing forward, poor pass out wide to Nkosi who has to go back for it. De Klerk to Snyman, now Lukhanyo Am takes it on. De Klerk looks as though he was going to pass it, but the crowd goes wild as Mtawarira nearly breaks through. He's brought down but they can't stop Duane Vermeulen! TRY SOUTH AFRICA! That was epic.
22'Ben Youngs boots to midway. That's a win overall from England, for all of the penalties they gave away in that stretch of play.
22'The Boks are camped on the England five-metre line. Missed pass by De Klerk and it's straight into touch. Huge roar from the tourists. There's some spite in this game now. A lovely added ingredient, to be honest.
21'Penalty for England. Pulling the maul down by Kyle Sinckler. Pollard punts to touch again. South Africa need to get five points, minimum, from this period of pressure.
21'Ah, some rugby. Excellent.
20'FIGHT! No sooner have England conceded a penalty at their own scrum than Faf de Klerk is being told to calm down in no uncertain terms by a group of white shirts. Kolisi ends up pulling at Mike Brown, there's three or four mini-rucks going on. Referee Poite knows it's all much of a nothingness and tells both captains to get their men to calm down. Silly stuff all round. "Take on me" by A-Ha plays over the stadium PA. Ho-ho.
19'And now England have turned them over, it will be England's put-in at the scrum. Every mini-win for the forwards is being greeted with almighty roars by the English pack, they know they have a hugely important role to play in this match after last week's debacle.
18'Itoje penalised for disrupting the lineout. Farrell goes to referee to complain about a South African asking for Itoje to be yellow carded. "The non-captain can't be coming to you and asking for a card. That's wrong," says Farrell. "Thank you for your support," replies referee Poite.
17'The Springboks are rolling. A great push in the maul from their pack. A penalty is pending. England are scrambling. Two penalties against England now. The maul goes down and South Africa will try again from a lineout, having opted to boot the penalty to touch.
16'Big up and under from Pollard, Le Roux gathers unchallenged and South Africa are building in the England half. De Klerk probing. Mtawarira taking it on to roars of 'Beast'. De Allende squared up in the tackle and it's a lineout for the Springboks.
14'Farrell's conversion stays out to the right, and it remains 12-0. South Africa need to dig themselves out of this hole just as they did last weekend.
13'TRY ENGLAND! Jonny May! More quick, slick play from the set-piece to the backs, across it goes, some wonderful interchange play from Ford and Brown and then Daly sets up May to streak home, beating a couple of men along the way. Well, well. Consider this the gauntlet being thrown down. Again.
13'0-12 Try - Jonny May , England
12'Obstruction there by Nkosi on Brown and England will clear deep into South Africa territory again. This is a good start by England, but then last week's was pretty good too...
11'Farrell with the conversion attempt. Easily through the posts. "Call on me" by Eric Prydz rings out over the stadium PA system.
11'0-7 Conversion - Owen Farrell , England
10'Billy Vunipola making some ground and Mike Brown will score! He scored last weekend, he's scored this weekend. Vunipola was the architect, committing men and then when the ball reached the backs, Ford, Farrell and May combine perfectly to set up Brown to run in from 20 metres. TRY ENGLAND!
10'0-5 Try - Mike Brown , England
9'Lovely catch under pressure from Sibusiso Nkosi, the star of South Africa's comeback last weekend. It's only his second Test and Ben Youngs was keen to put some height on that kick to give Nkosi something to think about, but he didn't buckle at all. Lineout England on the right wing now.
8'Farrell boots towards halfway. Lineout England.
7'It's taking some time to get the scrum right, with referee Romain Poite being very particular about how this should work. And now the Springboks are penalised as the scrum collapses at the second attempt. They look perplexed, while Joe Launchbury hollers his approval of the pack he has come back into for this match. Important marker there for England.
6'Good attack from South Africa down the left is snuffed out by Mike Brown, then England look like they are away only for Farrell to have flung a forward pass to Elliot Daly on their left. Expansive play from both sides.
4'Scrum goes down but England have the ball. Mistake! Intercepted pass by Ben Youngs. De Allende streaking down field from inside his own 22. Great charge forward by the centre but he is brilliantly tap-tackled with just the green grass of the England half between him and the try line. Wonderful covering tackle by Owen Farrell. A captain's effort if ever there was one.
3'High crossfield kick from George Ford is intended for Jonny May, and Willie Le Roux is beaten to it in the air by Jonny May. It was knocked on by the England wing though, and South Africa have the put-in.
2'Very slick England lineout, and they're clearly keen to make a fast start as well. Faf de Klerk scrambles back to shovel a kick back into play as it tumbles near to touch, and Handre Pollard boots it into touch. Attacking chance for England on the edge of the Springbok 22.
1'Deep kick off and England earn an early penalty against Faf de Klerk for being a bit too eager and straying offside.
1'We are go!
1'South Africa to kick off. 3, 2, 1...
1'Tendai Mtawarira is sharing this moment with his two kids, daughter Talumba and son Wangu. They are proudly standing next to their father during the anthem -- a raucous rendition it is too -- but Beast is the proudest of all. What a great moment.
1'By contrast, there's a slight pensiveness to England as they sing the anthem. They know they need a performance here to alleviate some of the pressure that is building on them and their coach.
1'There's a verve to this Springboks team that had been sadly lacking in recent years. Whether that's Rassie Erasmus, or Siya Kolisi, or simply that they won last week, who knows. But it's a visibly excited South Africa that has taken the field amid fireworks and green smoke.
1'The teams are out, it's almost game time at Free State Stadium.

First, though, the anthems...
1'Around ten minutes to go until kick-off. The teams have headed for the tunnel after warm-ups and should not be too far away from emerging for the anthems.
1'England's preparations were thrown off slightly this morning when a fire alarm went off in their hotel. Asked about it on TV before the match, Eddie Jones says: "It's all part of touring in South Africa." Tongue firmly in cheek there from the coach.
1'There is also a recall for fit-again Joe Launchbury, who replaces Nick Isiekwe in the starting line-up. Isiekwe was hooked by Eddie Jones after just 36 minutes of chaotic rugby last weekend.
1'For England, it is their pack and bench that spark the most intrigue. Brad Shields -- the New Zealand-born back row -- makes his first start after making a debut off the bench last week, and it is former England captain Chris Robshaw who makes way, dropping out of the matchday 23 entirely.
1'Elsewhere in the Springboks XV, Pieter-Steph du Toit comes in having been on the bench for the first Test, and he replaces Jean-Luc du Preez. At tight-head, Frans Malherbe starts ahead of Wilco Louw.
1'It's also a special day for Springbok captain Siya Kolisi. Last Saturday he became the first black South African to captain the side -- and his side won in fine style. This weekend? It's his 27th birthday today.
1'It will be a special day for Tendai Mtawarira. The 32-year-old nicknamed 'Beast' will play his 100th Test match, with coach Rassie Erasmus hailing him in his pre-match TV interview.

"We did speak a lot about that," said Erasmus. "It is a big thing, we firstly wanted to acknowledge it with a fast start but we have to mark it with a win - that's the best tribute we could pay to Beast."
1'Hello and welcome to ESPN's live coverage of the second Test between South Africa and England in Bloemfontein. Here's hoping for a repeat of last weekend's 81-point slugfest!
1'0-0 Start of first half
