Match Commentary

81'16-9 End of second half
80'So with less than a year to go until the Rugby World Cup, the No.1 team in the world has solidified that standing with a thumping win over the revered All Blacks, the reigning world champions. If these teams win through the pool phase and knockout stages at the World Cup, the first time they are scheduled to meet would be the final. And what a final that would be.
80'Great stat from Tom Hamilton in Dublin - the last time New Zealand didn't score a try was against the Lions in Wellington. The defence coach on each occasion? Andy Farrell. He is kryptonite to the All Blacks legend.
80'Hearts pounding all around the stadium. All Blacks have the ball, inside the 22, middle of the pitch - KNOCK ON! IT'S OVER! IRELAND HAVE BEATEN THE ALL BLACKS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER ON HOME SOIL!
80'Here come the All Blacks, down the left flank. Switched back inside as they reach halfway, right on top of the sponsors logo in the middle of the pitch. Out to the right the ball goes, they are into the final 20 seconds. Leinart-Brown bursting through. Barrett wide to Smith. They're into the Irish 22. Time has expired. The next time the ball goes dead, this is over...
79'Ireland have it at halfway. Murphy brought down to the ground. Ireland trying to work their way through phase ball, knowing it's them versus the All Blacks and the clock right now. And the clock is in their favour. High kick, which Barrett takes. New Zealand ball midway inside their own half. One minute to go....
78'Great hands from the All Blacks keeps the ball alive and moving, but they are not making any progress. Perenara to Retallick -- but this isn't making any ground at all. "Ireland, Ireland," chant the crowd. Wonderful atmosphere, wonderful play on the field. Huge conclusion building and Ireland have turned the ball over! Two minutes to go...
77'Sexton trots off to a huge ovation from the Irish faithful - Joey Carbery on in his place. Can the Irish see out the final three minutes?
77'Substitute on - Joey Carbery , Ireland
77'Player substituted - Johnny Sexton , Ireland
76'Rolling maul for Ireland, into the All Blacks' half. High kick is knocked on by Stockdale, advantage New Zealand, who then knock on off their own high kick. Scrum New Zealand. They're still 60 metres from the try they need, though.
75'But the All Blacks rob the Irish lineout! They punt to touch, and it's deflected as well off Irish hands and so the All Blacks will have the throw at the lineout. Just over five minutes remaining. New Zealand still deep inside their own territory. Another big punt forward into touch as the All Blacks keep disrupting the Irish lineout. This time, however, they've won it.
74'Barrett, to Read, but it's behind him and Sexton is on to it in a flash, forcing Ben Smith into touch. Sexton hollers and celebrates on the touchline, punching the air and roaring at the crowd as they roar back at him. This means the world to all of them.
74'Substitute on - Matt Todd , New Zealand
74'Player substituted - Ardie Savea , New Zealand
73'Time continues to tick away for the All Blacks. Henderson forces the ball back at the ruck, but New Zealand hold on just enough. They're trying to find some room, but they're making no headway inside their own 22. They need a moment of magic.
71'Ringrose makes a lovely cut-out pass, and Stockdale looks like he might have a chance. He kicks ahead -- and is then tap-tackled as he tries to charge forward. No penalty, and the Aviva Stadium is incandescent. Too bad, that was a fair challenge. New Zealand let the ball go dead, they'll have a 22 dropout.
70'Ireland have a lineout midway inside the New Zealand half - and they have it stolen! The All Blacks are turning the screw at every opportunity right now, but at the next breakdown, Ireland manage to force a penalty, with the All Blacks bringing down the maul. Scrum Ireland, nine minutes to go...
69'16-9 Penalty goal - Beauden Barrett , New Zealand
68'Penalty for New Zealand, and it's slotted by Barrett. A converted try would level it for the All Blacks. Deja vu ringing round the Aviva right now.
66'Lienert-Brown goes charging into the Irish line of some nice back-line ball, but as Barrett scampers through, he looks for a quick pass and gives it straight to Rob Kearney. Ireland get it into touch, and then win the ball at the lineout. Bundee Aki knocks on, having been penalised a minute earlier at the breakdown, and New Zealand will have the put-in at the scrum inside the Irish half. Time is ticking away for the All Blacks, though.
66'Substitute on - Jordan Larmour , Ireland
66'Player substituted - Rob Kearney , Ireland
65'Substitute on - Sean Cronin , Ireland
65'Player substituted - Rory Best , Ireland
65'Substitute on - Andrew Porter , Ireland
65'Player substituted - Tadhg Furlong , Ireland
64'Player substituted - Peter O'Mahony , Ireland
64'Substitute on - Jordi Murphy , Ireland
63'The All Blacks know it's now or never. Ioane charges into the Irish 22 on the left side. It's worked right and Smith sets up Goodhue, who is brought down around seven metres from the Ireland line. And from the recycled ball, Ireland win a penalty! Huge turnover for the Irish, who now have Peter O'Mahony needing treatment for what looks like cramp. Ireland have been absolutely fantastic at the breakdown, poaching over and over again and forcing the All Blacks into infringements.
62'Player substituted - Ryan Crotty , New Zealand
62'Substitute on - Anton Lienert-Brown , New Zealand
62'Player substituted - Devin Toner , Ireland
62'Substitute on - Iain Henderson , Ireland
61'Strong running from the All Blacks at halfway, with Barrett slipping it to Crotty who bursts through. Eventually it's a kick through that has Ireland outnumbered and Peter O'Mahony makes a magnificent grab on the ball, while sliding on his knees. Had he missed that, it would have almost certainly been a New Zealand try.
59'Bundee Aki surges towards halfway as Ireland sweep wide from the lineout. But the All Blacks have robbed Ireland at the breakdown. A kick forward goes into the Irish goal area and Kearney dots down, slightly relieved no doubt that a good opportunity for Ardie Savea amounts to little.
59'Player substituted - Kieran Marmion , Ireland
59'Substitute on - Luke McGrath , Ireland
58'Scrum New Zealand, with the Irish 22 in sight. Read pops it to Perenara, whose grubber ends up in Irish hands. They'll look to clear, and Marmion pops it up into touch from the base of the ruck.
58'Substitute on - TJ Perenara , New Zealand
58'Player substituted - Aaron Smith , New Zealand
57'After the penalty clearance and ensuing lineout, it's a scrum for Ireland midway inside their own half. It's delayed slightly as James Ryan becomes the latest player to require treatment. This has been an extremely physical encounter. Ireland attempted to swing it wide, but they're penalised for a forward pass -- which looks a slightly dubious decision judging by the television replay.
56'It looks as though that was a fairly contested high ball, Ioane getting up high and Kearney simply not seeing him due to focusing on the ball before clattering into the All Blacks' No.11. Both men needed treatment after that collision. But it's the right decision to give the penalty and leave it at that.
56'Substitute on - Richie Mo'unga , New Zealand
56'Player substituted - Damian McKenzie , New Zealand
55'Furious defence from the All Blacks, and one missed pass from Ireland sees the move breakdown, at least for a moment. Ireland still have the ball, but they are now back around midway inside the All Blacks' half. More great work at the breakdown allows them to keep building a platform, but they need to find some more inspiration to actually make some ground. Sexton launches it high, and this time Kearney has taken out Rieko Ioane in mid-air. This could be trouble for Ireland. Penalty New Zealand -- is there going to be more, though?
54'Great take under a high ball from Kearney, keeping Ireland on the front foot in opposition territory. That's been the way of things through this match. Van der Flier takes Ireland 10 metres inside the All Blacks' half. Phase after phase of Irish ball. And then Kearney wins another high ball, off an up-and-under! Ireland are charging towards the New Zealand line. This could be the game-breaker.
52'The All Blacks defend well on their own line, turning the ball over and getting it away towards halfway, where Ireland will have to build again. This is a furious contest.
52'Substitute on - Jack McGrath , Ireland
52'Player substituted - Cian Healy , Ireland
51'For the second weekend in a row, the All Blacks find themselves behind by double digits. Can they rally as they did in the second half against England? They are barely getting any clean ball, knocking on repeatedly at contested balls, and now Barrett has been forced out inside his own five-metre line. Dublin is rocking, memories of Chicago 2016 coming back strongly for the Irish. Can they repeat that famous victory?
50'16-6 Conversion - Johnny Sexton , Ireland
48'Absolutely brilliant from Ireland! TRY! Jacob Stockdale makes up for this earlier let-off with a magical piece of play. It's a set-piece play, with Ireland shortening their lineout, and switching the direction of play back towards the short side once it gets to Bundee Aki. It gets to Stockdale, who bursts through spectacularly and then latches on perfectly to his own kick ahead, using his momentum to slide in over the line from about five metres out. Spectacular play, one of the tries of the international year, not least for the fact that it was absolutely one off the training pitch. Joe Schmidt will be delighted with its execution. Ireland are flying.
48'14-6 Try - Jacob Stockdale , Ireland
47'From an Ireland scrum, the ball somehow squirts into New Zealand hands and Aaron Smith scurries forward. Ardie Savea was coming forward, but at the breakdown he is penalised for holding on. Excellent work by the Irish forwards once again, they are contesting the breakdown very cleanly and effectively.
47'Substitute on - Nepo Laulala , New Zealand
47'Player substituted - Owen Franks , New Zealand
47'Player substituted - Karl Tu'inukuafe , New Zealand
47'Substitute on - Ofa Tu'ungafasi , New Zealand
47'Player substituted - Codie Taylor , New Zealand
47'Substitute on - Dane Coles , New Zealand
44'Mistake by New Zealand off the back of the scrum, as the pass to Barrett goes to ground and forces the fly-half to scramble backwards. A quick exchange of kicks and New Zealand will have to look to build from their own half. Oh! Big mistake from Jacob Stockdale, who had gathered a punt downfield only to have his kick charged down! Kieran Read blocks it -- and then immediately knocks on with nobody between him and the try line. Wow. Big opportunity goes begging.
42'Ireland have a scrum on halfway, but from the first breakdown, Marmion's pass is too low and O'Mahony knocks on. Scrum New Zealand, 10 metres inside the Irish half.
41'The All Blacks are back out on the field, huddling together to prepare for the second half. And now Ireland emerge from the tunnel, ready to go. Ireland to kick off this second half, which we can only hope is as good as the first.
41'9-6 End of first half
40'Ireland accept the opportunity to knock the ball into touch and we are at the half. Everyone needs a breather, that was a brutal half of rugby!
40'9-6 Start of second half
39'Sexton takes the three points this time. Ireland are going to be fizzing that they haven't got a try out of these opportunities within 10 metres of the New Zealand line, and with some pretty loose attempts from the visitors to stay on the right side of the line.
39'9-6 Penalty goal - Johnny Sexton , Ireland
38'Rory Best isn't happy about that decision not to show a card. He tries to make that point to referee Barnes, who cuts him off quickly. "You heard what I said," says Barnes, and Best reluctantly accepts that it's the next offence that will bring a card.
38'Ireland are deep inside the 22. Seven metres out, another offside against New Zealand - they're climbing towards double figures for this now - and then almost immediately they're pinged again! Surely there's a card coming soon, this is becoming a serial offence. "Next one goes to the bin," says referee Barnes. He's been kind there, perhaps.
36'Advantage Ireland as they dominate the restart scrum. Nice crossfield kick from Sexton but Stockdale can't quite knock it down into the arms of an Irishman. Absolutely worth a go, considering Ireland had (yet another) penalty advantage. They'll go for the corner again, and you feel that Ireland really must get a try before halftime.
36'Kieran Read is needing some attention for a shoulder injury. This could be a big moment in this match. He looks like he will be able to continue, but it's a mark of the intensity of this match that it's taken down the man mountain that is the All Black No.8.
35'Ireland are still working through the phases, patiently, inside the 22. Sexton to Kearney but the ball goes to ground, only for New Zealand to knock on along the ground. Scrum Ireland, on the right flank, inside the 22.
34'Great turnover by Ireland on halfway, with Stockdale robbing the All Blacks then breaking through tackles to gain some momentum for Ireland. They are charging towards the All Blacks' 22.
32'Ireland are now the ones putting pressure on deep inside their opponents' half, but they've been penalised at the breakdown and the All Blacks will be able to clear their lines. Meanwhile, Liam Squire needs some treatment, so Scott Barrett comes on.
32'Player substituted - Liam Squire , New Zealand
32'Substitute on - Scott Barrett , New Zealand
29'Wonderful kick from Beauden Barrett -- he had a penalty advantage, but didn't need it, slotting a drop goal from midway inside the Irish half, dead centre of the pitch.
29'New Zealand looking to make some ground in the Irish half. Advantage to New Zealand for a knock on, but the confusion over who exactly knocked on makes Ireland stop, and Sam Whitelock charges towards their 22. You can't switch off for a single moment in this match, so keenly is it being contested.
29'6-6 Drop goal - Beauden Barrett , New Zealand
28'Easy penalty from Sexton, Ireland restore their three-point lead.
28'Is this a try? Rob Kearney looks like he wins the ball cleanly in the compete in the air - but has he knocked it on in reaching for the line. That's going to be ruled out for a knock on. It will go back for the earlier penalty against the All Blacks, but that was a desperately close call -- albeit the correct one by the officiating crew.
27'From the scrum, Ireland have the ball. And they have a penalty advantage as well! A kick over the top from Sexton, a scramble for the ball in the air -- and that could be a try! We're going to the TMO.
27'6-3 Penalty goal - Johnny Sexton , Ireland
25'Sexton kicks for touch, allowing Ireland to build from the lineout. Eventually Bundee Aki gets close, and Ireland barrel over the line soon after. But they are held up, and that's going to turn the ball over to New Zealand. CJ Stander was the man who went over the line, but there was never a question that he'd grounded the ball.
24'Ireland have a penalty on the All Blacks' 22 for another offside. Six penalties against the All Blacks in the first 24 minutes. Amazing really, and perhaps a bit of pressure beginning to tell on the famous black jerseys.
22'A scrum goes New Zealand's way, and they are looking to attack midway inside the Irish half. Knock on by Ireland, advantage New Zealand. Savea and Crotty look to make some ground on the right flank. Advantage over for the knock on, and almost immediately Ireland win the ball back off a knock on by the All Blacks. Fascinating, tight rugby being played right now.
19'Good, solid lineout play from the Irish. They alleviate the pressure. That's where England failed last week, particularly in the second half. Can Ireland keep that set-piece tight for the full 80 minutes?
19'Ireland looking to refocus after that sudden turn of events. However, a beautiful low kick from Beauden Barrett puts Ireland back inside their own 22.
17'3-3 Penalty goal - Beauden Barrett , New Zealand
16'Huge hit from Van der Flier as he takes the ball in stride and melts into two All Blacks. Stockdale gets to the 22 before he is brought down by Retallick. Ireland making the running right now, in the All Blacks' half. But then there's a careless knock on and a big kick downfield quickly turns the tables. Great kick and chase, and Ireland hold on in the ruck to gift the All Blacks a look at the posts. Wow, that went from defence to attack in the blink of an eye. That's the threat of the All Blacks, right there.
15'It looks like the medical attention has done the trick for O'Mahony. He will continue, and Sexton will boot for touch off the earlier penalty.
14'They've been turned over, though, but Ireland's joy at that will be tempered by the fact that Peter O'Mahony is receiving attention in their 22. They've earned a penalty, but are they about to lose O'Mahony to injury?
13'New Zealand have responded well to those points being scored, and are building some pressure around the Irish 22.
11'3-0 Penalty goal - Johnny Sexton , Ireland
10'Still Ireland build, but Wayne Barnes takes the play back for the previous offside. Five metres out, in front of the posts. Three points beckon for Sexton and Ireland.
9'Ireland safely collect the lineout, and are working the ball across towards the right flank. Now they attack down the short side off the ruck, Ringrose and Earls combining to cause some grief. New Zealand have a penalty pending against them. Ireland looking to make it count for more than three points though.
7'First bit of running rugby from Ireland, and they get to halfway after some nice handling along the backs. Rory Best takes the charge over into New Zealand territory. CJ Stander now, held up by Owen Franks, the ball hits the deck on the next pass but it bounced backwards and eventually the All Blacks are penalised, Retallick straying offside. Penalty at halfway, and Sexton will boot it deeper into New Zealand territory.
5'Kieran Read makes some good progress low towards the posts, but the Irish defence rebounds well and the All Blacks lose some ground. They still have the ball though, but eventually the Ireland defences forces the All Blacks to hold on to long in the ruck. Penalty Ireland, huge, huge roar from the Dublin faithful. Massive mental plus-point for Ireland in that passage of play.
4'All Blacks take the ball off the top, Julian Savea sets up an attack, and Aaron Smith starts taking charge from the back of a succession of rucks. They're five metres from the Ireland line.
3'Good covering from Rob Kearney on a cross kick but he slides into touch and New Zealand will have an attacking lineout, 10 metres from the Ireland line.
2'Some early high kicking from both sides, to test each other's nerve. Few clean takes in the air, as well, which shows how keenly contested these early exchanges have been. Ball around midfield, with the All Blacks trying to build some possession.
1'New Zealand to kick off, Wayne Barnes is the referee... Here. We. Go!
1'Huge roars from the stands as the All Blacks go through their haka, this is a hugely anticipated encounter and the pre-match build-up has really set the stage for what should hopefully be a thrilling encounter.
1'Rousing rendition of "Ireland's Call" and now there's a buzz around the Aviva Stadium as New Zealand set up for the haka.
1'The teams are out on the pitch, walking from the tunnel to the beat of a drumming group. The atmosphere is building nicely, and the anthems will follow before the haka.
1'It's a huge match, not least with the Rugby World Cup looming large next September, and Irish legend Brian O'Driscoll says that a win for the home side would give them a significant edge heading to Japan next year.
1'For the All Blacks, Ryan Crotty replaces the injured Sonny Bill Williams in the only change from the starting XV that beat England at Twickenham last Saturday.

1'Team news from earlier this week saw Ireland's Dan Leavy ruled out, with Josh van der Flier set to start at loose forward in his place.

1'Hello and welcome to ESPN's live commentary of arguably the match of this year's November Tests - a match between the champions of the southern hemisphere and the northern hemisphere in Dublin.

1'0-0 Start of first half
