Micheal Okorach will captain Uganda at the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco from July 20-22.

"We decided Okorach leads the team because he has showed good leadership qualities and has also proved that he is always hungry to win," Rugby Cranes Sevens coach Tolbert Onyango told KweseESPN on Thursday after training at the Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala.

Onyango, a former Kenya international, described Okorach as "good on and off the field as a player and leader".

Philip Wokorach will be the vice-captain.

Okorach, who captained the team during the World Series qualifier in Hong Kong and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia, said he was "glad that once again I have been selected to lead the national team".

"Leading the national team at a World Cup is not something small, and I will take it with a lot of dedication," Okorach told KweseESPN.

Onyango said the players were happy that Uganda, after 15 years of trying, would finally appear at one of rugby's biggest tournaments.

The team qualified for the tournament, alongside Zimbabwe, by virtue of reaching the 2017 Rugby Africa Sevens Championship final at Legends Sports Ground.in Kampala last October, when the Rugby Cranes Sevens were crowned continental champions for the second year in a row.

"The boys are upbeat and looking forward to their first ever World Cup," Onyango said.

"It's been a long road towards getting to the World Cup."

Uganda will open their campaign against Samoa on July 20. The winners will face England in the Championship Cup Round of 16, while the losers will enter the Bowl competition.

South Africa and Kenya will also represent Africa in San Francisco.
