Prep Mania profile: Riley Ripp

Riley Ripp, Waunakee High School

Year: Senior.

Sports: Baseball, football, wrestling.

Sports highlights: Riley is a three-time letterwinner and in his fourth season as a varsity starter in baseball competing as a first baseman, designated hitter and pitcher. Named a captain by his teammates for his senior season, he is a starter at first base and also pitches for the Warriors, who earned a share of the Badger North Conference title last season. As a junior, he earned All-Badger North Conference second-team honors at first base after batting .356. He also earned Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Academic All-State and All-District honors.

He lettered in football as an offensive lineman as a senior and started at center in the state championship game for the Warriors, who won the WIAA Division 2 title and their third straight Badger North Conference championship and finished with a 14-0 record. He also competed in wrestling at 170 pounds as a freshman.

Pre-game ritual or superstition: For football, drink a purple or yellow Powerade and eat a Protein Bar before every game. For baseball, munch on some Skittles, either wild berry or regular.

Cumulative GPA: 3.8.

Favorite subject/class: Agriculture.

Favorite teacher: Mr. Marx.

Quick quote: “Sports are tricky and can have many setbacks. You just have to keep competing and try to outwork everyone.”

Three words to describe me are: Hard-working, respectful, determined.

I got my start in sports: All I remember is running around my yard throwing footballs and baseballs to myself.

I wish I could play: Golf.

My most memorable moments in sports: Winning a State Championship in football my senior year and advancing to the state tournament in baseball my junior year.

I like about high school sports: They are competitive and fun because you get to play with all the guys you grew up playing with.

I enjoy playing baseball because: There are a lot of ups and downs, one game you can go 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and the next game you could go 4-for-4 with four hits. You have to compete every pitch and the game can shift in hurry.

Advice: “Stay in the moment, it goes by a lot quicker than you think. Also, not everything will always go the way you want it to. It’s a good thing to face adversity.

My role models are: My parents, Chuck and Jenny, and my grandparents.

Most inspirational teammate: Derek Lee, he always been a strong leader and a great friend.

My family also includes: My sisters, Kailyn and Morgan.

Nickname: Ripp, Chuck.

Favorite TV show: ‘The Office’.

Favorite food: Tacos.

Favorite fast food place and/or restaurant: Culver’s.

My perfect day: Wake up around 9 a.m., hang out with the family, go and play baseball while my family is watching and then afterwards having a little family get together.

I like to read: Anything on Social Media because it’s entertaining.

This and that: I live on a dairy farm so a lot of my time is spent working on it … member of a leadership committee organized by our athletic director, Aaron May … member of Future Farmers of America (FFA) and a youth apprenticeship program … through the FFA I have earned my Greenhand and Chapter degree … volunteer work includes youth baseball tournaments and wrestling tournaments, St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church free throw contest and Waunakee Neighborhood Connections … have earned High Honors throughout high school and earned an Academic Letter.

Hobbies: Playing baseball, hanging out with friends, working on the farm.

Post-high school plans: Attend Madison College and study Agriculture.
