Newsome goes over 3,000 career yards in WCU's 42-27 win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Detrez Newsome scored two touchdowns, rushing for 146 yards to go over 3,000 for his career, and Western Carolina defeated Gardner-Webb 42-27 Saturday night.

Newsome's scores came on runs of 84 and 7 yards, extending his school record for total touchdowns to 42 while posting his 13th 100-yard rushing game. The Catamounts (2-1), who came in as the FCS leader in total offense, averaging 630 yards per game, finished with 435 against the Runnin' Bulldogs (1-2). Western Carolina also snapped a seven-game road losing streak.

Tyrie Adams was 14-of-23 passing for 224 yards and three touchdowns and an interception. Terryon Robinson had 102 yards receiving and a score.

Tyrell Maxwell ran 34 yards in the second quarter for Gardner-Webb's first touchdown of the season but Newsome responded on the ensuing possession with his 84-yarder. WCU led 21-13 at halftime.

Adams threw touchdown passes of 39 and 9 yards in the third quarter for a 35-13 lead. Gardner-Webb got within 35-20 but Maxwell was intercepted by Marvin Tillman, leading to Corey Holloway's short TD run for a 42-20 bulge with under six minutes left.
