Elon earns first win over Richmond, 36-33 in CAA opener

RICHMOND, Va. -- Davis Cheek found Matt Foster with a 12-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass and Owen Johnson kicked a 32-yard field goal as Elon beat Richmond for the first time in eight tries, 36-33 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener Saturday.

Elon has won three straight for the first time since the 2010 season.

Warren Messer picked off a Kyle Lauletta pass to give the Phoenix the ball on the Richmond 22 to set up the game-winning field goal.

Lauletta hit Cortrelle Simpson for a 93-yard score to give the Spiders a 23-19 lead and Tyler Wilkins ran 32 yards to give Richmond (2-2, 0-1) a 33-26 advantage.

Lauletta was 27 of 47 for 497 yards and three touchdowns, but was picked off twice. Simpson caught 10 passes for 192 yards and a score.

Cheek was 13 of 19 for 134 yards and three touchdowns for Elon (3-1, 1-0).
