Sources: Dartmouth is hiring Stanford assistant coach Brett MacConnell as the school’s next coach. He’s a long-time Princeton assistant who played a key role building that program’s Sweet 16 team in 2023.   MacConnell brings significant Ivy League experience, including coaching four Ivy League Players of the Year and being part of 231 wins in in his 12 years there. He coached 19 professional players, and his ability to provide “transformational leadership” was attractive to Dartmouth brass.

Akron coach John Groce has informed his team he’s leaving for the head job at Charleston, per an ESPN source. He’d emerged as the top target in Charleston’s head coach search over the weekend, per Jeff Borzello. Groce has led the Zips to four of the last five NCAA tournaments.

Sources: St. Bonaventure is finalizing a deal to make Daemen University coach Mike MacDonald the school’s next head coach. He’s won more than 500 games as a college coach, including going 61-3 the last two seasons.    He’s the only coach in college basketball history to win more than 100 games in Division I, Division II and Division III. Bonaventure officials looked at the DII translation of coaches like Saint Louis’ Josh Schertz (Indiana State) and Iowa’s Ben McCollum (Drake).

Utah State hires Northern Iowa's Ben Jacobson as coach

Utah State and Northern Iowa coach Ben Jaconson are finalizing a five-year deal to make him the school’s next coach, per me and Jeff Borzello. Jacobson won 397 games over 20 seasons at Northern Iowa, including five NCAA appearances. Utah State has reached the NCAA tournament in six of the last seven seasons in which the tournament was played with four different coaches leading teams there. Utah State is expected to have NIL resources to make it competitive near the top of the Pac-12 next year.

Rick Pitino has signed a new deal with St. John’s, sources confirm to ESPN. The deal includes an additional year through the 2029-30 season and a significant increase in pay to make him the Big East’s second highest paid coach.

NEWS: Saint Louis head coach Josh Schertz has withdrawn his name from consideration for the NC State coaching vacancy, sources told me and Jeff Borzello. He’s informed NC State officials he’s no longer a candidate.
