Milan late show secures UCL

#INSERT type:image caption: AC Milan players celebrate securing a top-three finish in Serie A END# AC Milan claimed a dramatic 2-1 win at Siena to claim the final Champions League place on the last day of the Serie A season.
With Fiorentina beating Pescara 5-1 the pressure was on Massimiliano Allegri's men and they were out of the top three when Claudio Terzi gave Siena the lead in the 25th minute.
- Paul: Dramatic late show seals UCL spot for Milan
Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini and Siena's Christian Terlizzi were then both sent off for second bookable offences in the space of two minutes before Mario Balotelli and Philippe Mexes netted to hand Milan the win.
Balotelli had an early chance as he fired in from 25 yards but Gianluca Pegolo made a smart low save.
M'Baye Niang then should have put the visitors ahead as Robinho's low cross found him inside the six-yard box but he blazed over the bar.
It was all Milan at that point and Pegolo was called into action in the 21st minute as Robinho unleashed a curler from distance.
But they were punished for not taking their chances four minutes later as Alessandro Rosina's cross from the left found an unmarked Terzi who headed home.
Just before the half-hour mark Balotelli hit the bar with a header and moments later the former Manchester City man fired a long-range free-kick over.
Riccardo Montolivo also fired over two minutes before the break as Milan continued to be frustrated.
The visitors began the second-half as they had finished the first with Montolivo and Balotelli both firing over the crossbar again.
They managed to find the target in the 65th minute as Stephan El Shaarawy tried his luck from the edge of the box but Pegolo was equal to his effort.
Two minutes later El Shaarawy headed over the bar before Ambrosini was shown his marching orders after clattering into Adrian Calello.
And just a minute later Terlizzi followed him down the tunnel for his tackle on Giampaolo Pazzini.
No Milan player could get the vital touch on Mattia De Sciglio's inviting cross from the left as the Rossoneri pushed for an equaliser and Pegolo was forced into another save by Balotelli.
Nine minutes from time Allegri's men were rewarded for their dominance as Felipe was penalised for pulling Balotelli's shirt inside the box and the striker tucked the penalty low to Pegolo's left.
And the drama did not stop there as five minutes later Mexes tucked home his own rebound from close range to complete the comeback.

                      Napoli 2-1 Siena

Marek Hamsik rescued all three points for Champions League qualifiers Napoli to consolidate a historic season at the Stadio San Paolo, but Siena slipped out of Serie A.
The Tuscans had already been relegated this afternoon by virtue of 17th-placed Genoa's goalless draw with Inter Milan, but debutant Fabrizio Grillo gave the travelling faithful a boost with his first-half finish.
Napoli secured second place - the club's highest finish since 1990 - thanks to victory at Bologna on Wednesday and with the San Paolo crowd demanding one last push on home turf, Edinson Cavani levelled in the 73rd minute.
A 23rd league win of the campaign was suddenly up for grabs as Siena fell apart in the final stages and Hamsik duly nudged home a winner deep into time added on.
Cavani's quest for a 35th goal of a remarkable season continued and the Uruguayan first bared his teeth with a shot from Omar El Kaddouri's ball across the box.
Gianluca Pegolo parried that time and in the 11th minute he managed to punch Gokhan Inler's piledriver out for a corner.
But after Cavani rattled a post with Siena's defence prone from another corner, the spark went out of Napoli's game.
A series of half chances for Swiss striker Innocent Emeghara helped Siena grow in confidence and, in the 36th minute, they took the lead.
Former CSKA Sofia defender Grillo, a January signing, was the surprise candidate to drive the ball home left-footed at the end of a swift raid forward.
Cavani failed to produce an instant response for Napoli, wasting a splendid cross from Giandomenico Mesto by heading wide, and the hosts were spared when Emeghara clipped just over the crossbar at the end of the subsequent counter-attack.
Then, three minutes before the interval, Pegolo pulled off a stunning save to deny Cavani once again.
Salvador Agra kept Napoli on their toes as play resumed by surging into the area on a mission to pick out Emeghara, who came up just short.
The Swiss' follow-up header sailed over the bar but, despite a spell on the backfoot, Napoli were giving precious little space away.
In the 53rd minute Cavani had the ball in the Siena goal but the offside flag denied him an equaliser. He would not wait much longer to score, however, as Napoli drew level 12 minutes from time.
There were groans as El Kaddouri's stinging snapshot clattered the bar but Cavani duly stole in to head home the rebound.
After seeing their own destiny taken out of their hands earlier in the day, Siena would perhaps have been content to settle for a point for their spirited performance.
But it was not to be as Hamsik denied the Tuscans any reason to be cheerful three minutes into stoppage time by steering the ball home with his outstretched left boot.

                        Siena 0-1 Fiorentina

Fiorentina kept up the chase of AC Milan while condemning their local rivals Siena to almost certain relegation to Serie B with victory at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Gonzalo Rodriguez's goal was enough for the Viola to keep alive their faint glimmer of a chance of qualifying for the Champions League as they go into the final two games of the season four points adrift of third-placed Milan.
The win also practically guarantees them a place in the Europa League while Siena now need a miracle to stay up with six points separating them from Genoa with two games of the season remaining.
The visitors, aware of Milan's win over Pescara before kick-off, started brightly with Juan Cuadrado sending in a warning shot which missed the target in the third minute.
Just 10 minutes passed before Vincenzo Montella's men took the lead.
Pasqual's low cross from the right was bundled over the line by Rodriguez, who used his stomach to ensure the ball went in.
Fiorentina nearly doubled their lead 10 minutes before the interval when Borja Valero's shot was pushed onto the post by Gianluca Pegolo.
Siena were unable to muster any kind of reaction and Fiorentina continued to look closer to a second than their hosts were to an equaliser.
Matias Fernandez flashed a shot just over the crossbar before Giulio Migliaccio did the same with a header.
Emiliano Viviano was finally called into action in the 70th minute to push Alessandro Rosina's shot away, but it was too little from a Siena side who needed points to stand any chance of staying up.
Fiorentina substitute Luca Toni also hit the crossbar as Fiorentina eased to three points which keeps them breathing down Milan's necks, but more importantly, gives them a practically guaranteed place in Europe next season.

                          Catania 3-0 Siena

Gonzalo Bergessio scored all three goals as Catania pushed 10-man Siena a step closer to the relegation trap door.
Argentina international Bergessio struck in the 14th, 52nd and 71st minutes - the latter two after Siena had lost Felipe to a red card - as Catania earned their first win in six to consolidate their place in the top half of the table.
Siena, in contrast, are in deep trouble near the foot of the standings after slumping to a third successive defeat and they are now five points adrift of safety with only three games remaining.
To make matters worse for Giuseppe Iachini's men, those three games are against top four sides Fiorentina, Napoli and AC Milan.
Today, Siena simply had no answer to Bergessio, who almost opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a fine turn and shot which visiting goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo did superbly to save.
Pegolo was well beaten four minutes later though as Bergessio put Catania ahead with a shot into the bottom right-hand corner following a fine assist from Lucas Castro.
Siena tried to respond with two long-range efforts from Alessio Sestu that failed to trouble home keeper Alberto Frison before the visitors suffered a major setback three minutes before half-time when defender Felipe was dismissed.
The Brazilian was shown a red card after handling the ball to prevent Pablo Barrientos from breaking clear.
It was largely all one-way traffic in the second half as Catania made the most of their extra man.
The home side thought they had doubled the lead in the 47th minute when Castro found the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for a handball.
Siena then briefly threatened through Setsu, who produced a fine save from Frison with a far-post volley, but almost immediately they found themselves 2-0 down as Bergessio netted from close range.
Bergessio almost completed his hat-trick just after the hour mark after breaking clean through, but Pegolo came to his side's rescue.
The 28-year-old hitman did not have to wait much longer to secure himself the match ball though as he notched his third 19 minutes from time after gaining the benefit of a marginal offside decision.
