Elias Hernandez, Martin Cauteruccio fire Cruz Azul past Monterrey in Copa MX final

Goals from Elias Hernandez and Martin Cauteruccio propelled Cruz Azul to a 2-0 victory over Monterrey in Wednesday's Copa MX final.

Cruz Azul had the better chances in Monterrey's Estadio BBVA Bancomer and won the game with relative ease, after the Mexico City side weathered some early pressure from Rayados.

The cup victory should provide La Maquina with a boost heading into the 2018 Apertura Liga MX playoffs, with Cruz Azul -- one of Mexico's "big four" teams -- looking to end a title drought stretching back to 1997.

Hernandez was man of the match and opened in the scoring in the 34th minute, when he latched onto a spill from Juan Pablo Carrizo and drove the ball into the net.

Former Leon winger Hernandez then turned provider in the 53rd minute, squaring a pass from the left for Cauteruccio to tap in and extend Cruz Azul's lead.

Monterrey had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half and thought it had a won a penalty just before half-time, but an offside was again called.

Rayados have now played four finals in Estadio BBVA Bancomer, which was only opened three years ago, and only won one: The 2017 Apertura Copa MX.
