Detroit rebounded from its worst loss of the season with a 4-2 victory over Montreal Wednesday. The Red Wings have won five of their last six games, with the only loss being Tuesday's 6-2 defeat against the Washington Capitals.

The Red Wings have done a good job of overcoming injuries to veterans Steve Yzerman and Chris Chelios and sit four points behind first-place St. Louis in the Central Division.

Martin Lapointe has helped picked up the offensive slack, scoring goals in four straight games while leading the Red Wings with eight. That is half of his total from last season when he was the only member of the Wings to play in all 82 games.

Chicago failed to post consecutive victories for the first time this season with Thursday's 5-4 loss to former coach Mike Keenan and the Boston Bruins. The Blackhawks allowed the winning goal on a bad-angle shot with 89 seconds remaining.

The Blackhawks remain winless against non-expansion teams. Their only point against a team other than Columbus or Minnesota came in a 5-4 overtime loss at Montreal on October 14.

Detroit posted a 4-0 victory in the only meeting between the teams on October 12. Manny Legace made 23 saves for his first career shutout and Sergei Fedorov chipped in a goal and assist.
