TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- The surging New York Islanders try to
extend their longest unbeaten streak in nearly five years
tonight when they visit the struggling Tampa Bay Lightning.
Wade Flaherty recorded 23 saves for his fifth career shutout and Brad Isbister and Roman Hamrlik scored power-play goals as the surprising Islanders recorded their fourth straight victory. Ironically, four of Flaherty's shutouts have come against Florida teams. Three of them have come against the Lightning. The Islanders defense has been exceptional of late, allowing only four goals in the last four games. Hamrlik has six goals to lead all NHL defensemen. The Lightning extended their season-worst losing streak to four games Wednesday night with a 6-1 loss to the New York Rangers. Goaltender Kevin Weekes had his second straight poor outing and has given up 12 goals in his last two starts. Weekes has garnered the bulk of the starts as Dan Cloutier recovers from biceps tendinitis. Cloutier may return to face the Islanders tonight. The Lightning play their next four games at home, meeting the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames after tonight. The teams battled to a 3-3 tie here on opening night.
