Edmonton has endured a roller-coaster season thus far, going 5-1-1 through its first seven games before hitting a wall with a 0-4-1 slide. The Oilers finally broke through with a win over Anaheim before holding off rival Calgary, 3-2, on Wednesday.

The Oilers now hope to keep up their winning ways against the NHL's two newest clubs. After tonight's game, they embark on a five-game road trip beginning Sunday at expansion Columbus.

Edmonton goaltender Tommy Salo made 27 saves against Calgary and was rewarded with a three-year contract extension on Thursday. He has started 12 of the Oilers' 14 games this season and is 6-4-2 with a 2.55 goals-against average and .896 save percentage.

Minnesota failed to post conescutive victories for the first time in the franchise's young history with a 3-2 loss to Chicago Sunday. Scott Pellerin and rookie Marian Gaborik each had a goal and an assist while Manny Fernandez made 16 saves.

Gaborik is making an early case for the Calder Trophy, given to the league's top rookie. He leads the club with five goals and a plus-2 rating while being tied for second with eight points.

The Wild are 0-4-1-0 on the road this season and will be searching for that elusive first win away from Xcel Energy Center on their three-game trip. They visit Calgary and Colorado after tonight.

The Northwest Division counterparts are meeting for the first time.
