China's medals came through Wang Yihan (Gold, 2011), Wang Xin (Bronze, 2011), Li Xuerui (Silver, 2013 and 2014) and Chen Yufei (Bronze, 2017). Saina Nehwal (Silver, 2015 and Bronze, 2017) and Sindhu (Bronze, 2013 and 2014, and Silver, 2017) account for India's medals.

Number of World Championship medals won by Sindhu this decade, the most by a women's singles player and joint-most with Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan among all singles players since the start of 2011.

Sindhu became the first Indian to reach the final of the Olympics and the World Championships. She had previously won bronze at the 2013 and 2014 editions, where she lost to Ratchanok Intanon and Carolina Marin respectively. She had also lost to Spain's Marin in the final of last year's Rio Olympics.

Sindhu is the second Indian after Saina Nehwal to reach the final of the Worlds. Saina had lost to Marin in the previous edition in 2015 and claimed Silver in this edition after losing in the semi-finals to Okuhara.
