Missed dunk at UMass Lowell shatters backboard

Dunk attempt shatters backboard (0:09)

UMass Lowell's Dontavious Smith steals the ball, goes up for a dunk and shatters the backboard. (0:09)

Shattered backboards don't appear as often as they used to in the late '70s, when Darryl Dawkins broke two in one season. Or even the late '80s, when Pitt's Jerome Lane "sent it in."

But every so often, a player demolishes a backboard like UMass Lowell's Dontavious Smith did Tuesday during a game against Division III Wheelock College.

Not only did Smith miss the dunk, play was suspended for more than an hour.
